The witches are back! And they’re bringing a new generation of magic with them. In an exclusive with Deadline, it has been announced that Oscar winner Dianne Wiest and Oscar nominee Stockard Channing are officially returning for Practical Magic 2. The film is the long-awaited sequel to Warner Bros. Pictures’ 1998 cult-classic romantic fantasy. The two will reprise their beloved roles as Aunt Jet and Aunt Frances, the enchanting matriarchs who raised the Owens sisters and taught them the ways of spellcasting, sisterhood, and survival.
Production for Practical Magic 2 is now underway, with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman also returning as Sally and Gillian Owens, the two witch sisters at the heart of the original story. The sequel continues the legacy of the Owens family, bringing in a fresh cast to expand the magical world first introduced in Alice Hoffman’s 1995 novel.
Joey King (Bullet Train, The Kissing Booth) has been confirmed to play Sally’s daughter in Practical Magic 2. The role was previously rumored and is now locked in. She’s joined by an exciting ensemble of new faces, including Lee Pace (Foundation), Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones, The New Look), Xolo Maridueña (Blue Beetle), and Solly McLeod (The Dead Don’t Hurt). While character details remain under wraps, the casting hints at a dynamic expansion of the magical Owens universe.
The film is being directed by Susanne Bier (The Perfect Couple, Bird Box) with a script penned by returning writer Akiva Goldsman and Succession’s Georgia Pritchett. Bullock and Kidman are also producing alongside Denise Di Novi, a producer on the original film. Practical Magic 2 is slated for worldwide theatrical release on September 18, 2026.
In a statement, the Practical Magic 2 creative team reflected on the journey: “Twenty-five years ago, Sally, Gillian, Aunt Jet, and Aunt Franny flew off the pages of Alice Hoffman’s beloved novel and into theaters around the world. We’re thrilled to bring the Owens family back to the big screen with Joey, Lee, Maisie, Solly, and Xolo joining the next chapter in our story.”
Originally directed by Griffin Dunne, Practical Magic grossed over $68 million globally and developed a devoted following for its blend of fantasy, sisterhood, and gothic charm. With the original cast returning and fresh magic brewing, Practical Magic 2 promises to enchant a whole new generation of fans.
