Crunchyroll is one of the world’s largest streaming companies, dedicated entirely to streaming anime series and films. Meanwhile, Luminopia is the first FDA-approved (approved back in 2021) digital therapeutic, designed to treat kids with amblyopia, also known as “lazy eye”. The therapeutic basically uses a VR headset that lets the kids choose select TV shows and movies to watch on it. Once that’s done, the VR headset uses “[d]ual-acting algorithms” to modify the TV show/movie in real time to “promote weaker eye usage and encourage patients’ brains to combine input from both eyes”. Note that this is in direct contrast to conventional methods which just punishes the stronger eye with eyepatches, blurring (atropine) eye drops, etc..

All in all, it sounds like Luminopia is a very neat way to fight lazy eye. However, you might be wondering what that has to do with Crunchyroll. Well, since the program relies on having a library of shows and movies to access, it’s perfect for a streaming service to step in to provide content for that. And now, that library is about to get bigger.

Crunchyroll is proud to announce a collaboration with Luminopia to provide anime series and films to the therapeutic’s platform. The exact series and films that will be available are currently unknown. However, Crunchyroll states that they are “offering even more TV episodes that resonate with young audiences and providing kids with the option to watch a wider variety of content as treatment” as part of this partnership. Thus, you can expect anime catering to younger audiences…hopefully.

To be honest, this collaboration between Crunchyroll and Luminopia isn’t all that surprising in hindsight. After all, this medical therapeutic requires a large library of shows and movies in order to catch kids’ interest in watching something for long periods of time. Thus, having anime available would make it work a lot better, and so everyone wins.
