HBO is hard at work on another DC Comics TV series – but maybe not one you’d expect. Variety reported today that a V for Vendetta show is currently in development.
V for Vendetta takes place in a dystopian near-future with Britain ruled by the fascist Norsefire party. The story follows an anarchist known as V, who (wearing a distinctive Guy Fawkes mask) aims to topple the government. To do so, he teams up with Evey Hammond, a woman rescued from the country’s secret police.
The original V for Vendetta comics started as a serial written by Alan Moore and illustrated by David Lloyd. The story initially debuted in 1982 in the British anthology “Warrior”. DC went on to take over publishing in 1988.
Now, with Warner Bros. Television the home of DC’s page-to-screen adaptations, a V for Vendetta series is in the planning stage at HBO. Pete Jackson is attached to write. He previously received a BAFTA nomination for his work on the drama Somewhere Boy. James Gunn and Peter Safran will executive produce the show for DC Studios.
V for Vendetta previously jumped from page to screen in a 2005 feature. The film came from James McTeigue and the Wachowskis, with Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman starring.
The Epix/HBO Max series Pennyworth, which followed Bruce Wayne’s butler Alfred in his early life in 1960s London, was also meant to serve as both a precursor to the Batman-universe series Gotham and V for Vendetta. The show’s creative team intended to use the political climate in the show to demonstrate the rise of the Norsefire party. However, Pennyworth was cancelled before the storyline fully took shape on screen.
As for any plans to connect the upcoming TV series to the rest of DC’s live-action universe? Fans will just have to wait and see.
