This year marks the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. conquering the world of video games. So of course Universal and Illumination easily slated their blockbuster sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, for a weekend not too long after this year’s Mario Day festivities.

Now that we’ve received one final trailer for this massive Nintendo sequel that promises an early start to Summer Movie Season, the folks at Universal and Illumination have also shared some new cast members along for the ride. Which includes the revelation of the voice actor behind the long teased arrival of Yoshi!

Introducing Donald Glover – As Yoshi!

While the “Final Trailer” announcement that tickets are now on sale may suggest the fun and learning is over, there are still some surprises for the road ahead. Case in point: while we finally know that Donald Glover (he of Community and Solo fame) will be voicing Yoshi, we haven’t heard them in action just yet.

As the greatly anticipated sequel currently occupies a April 1st debut, we’ll all have to take this knowledge, and the perfect headshot of the Mr. and Mrs. Smith star, as a raincheck for hearing the final product. However I’m confident in making two claims here and now: Donald Glover is not only our most handsome Yoshi, but he can very easily censor himself if he chooses to break into a Mario Bros.’ themed revamp of “Bonfire.”

Seriously, look at the headshot Nintendo used:

Chris Meledandri (the CEO of Illumination) shared that Super Mario Galaxy Movie news with great enthusiasm, hyping up Glover as “an incredibly talented actor, who also happens to be a Nintendo super fan.” The lack of lines of wisdom from Yoshi doesn’t mean there isn’t a new character with a very familiar voice to pick out in the trailer shown above. Which leads me to another pair of announcements for this Super Mario Galaxy cast!

Issa Rae And Luis Guzman Are Also Joining The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Cast

Donald Glover’s casting was only part of a handful of new tidbits dished out during today’s latest Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct! With on hand for the festivities, as usual, Nintendo’s official YouTube debrief told us that Wednesday’s Luis Guzman will be playing “The Imposing Wart” – first introduced in 1987 through the game Doki Doki Panic (known to international audiences as 1988’s Super Mario Bros. 2.)

You can totally pick out Guzman’s voice in the trailer, but unfortunately I cannot say the same for fellow cast member Insecure star/co-creator Issa Rae. That’s because her character, “the imposing ruler of the Honey Hive Galaxy” known as Honey Queen, is still being saved to debut in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, much like Donald Glover’s Yoshi.

To learn more about those revelations, as well as some of the other digital goodies planned for this new Mario movie, check out the Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct – included below:

That doesn’t dampen my excitement to finally hear Ms. Rae threaten Chris Pratt’s Mario and Charlie Day’s Luigi (both of whom will be adventuring together this time, per the stars themselves) in this absolutely stunning, costume changing, world hopping odyssey!

Closing things out with the final teas of “some big surprises, and some very small” looming ahead, Chris Meledandri has effectively put the cherry on top of the centerpiece to this Super Mario Bros milestone anniversary! It’s enough to make a person want to buy tickets to the earliest showing possible – and you can now do just that. So seek out your tickets for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, set to debut in theaters on April 1st!
