After really digging 2024’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Paramount’s announcement of a sequel in 2027 was a double edged sword. The wait has kind of felt like forever, even with tidbits like Kristen Bell being cast as Amy Rose helping stoke the fires. But that choice seems to be paying off, thanks to a huge easter egg in the Sonic the Hedgehog 4 title reveal video. As was the case with its previous entry, a little bit of music has told us a whole lot about the future – which has me thinking that I finally know what’s going on with that mystery 2028 Sonic movie.

Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Is On The Clock!

I’m about to lay down two words that are going to give OG fans of the Blue Blur goosebumps: “Sonic Boom.” No, I’m not talking about the animated series, but the classic Sega theme song that plays a huge part in Sonic the Hedgehog 4’s first teaser reel. Released freshly by Paramount, we get that gorgeous tune heralding the countdown to its March 19, 2027 release date.

Open your eyes and ears, and feast upon this glorious gift, my friends:

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey teaser game walked so Sonic the Hedgehog 4 could run. What’s more, we get some pretty threatening dialogue from Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik – which you can read below:

You think your world is safe, but your time is about to run out. The chaos has only just begun.

Mix that in with the image of Amy Rose’s hammer shattering a glass wall, and you know what that means – IT’S SONIC CD TIME, BABY! In an effort to avoid plagiarizing Past Mike, I must link back to a piece I wrote at CinemaBlend. However, between the ending of Sonic 3 introducing Amy and Metal Sonic, and some released concept art showing plans that went hard in the alternate timeline theory, the pump has long been primed to get crazy with time travel.

Stock villain threats, a sick theme song seemingly, and ominous imagery appear to confirm that Sonic the Hedgehog 4’s story seems to be spoken for. With that theory placed on the board, I think we can go one step further towards going full “Pepe Silvia” on the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise’s potential moves. Which brings us to that random untitled Sonic movie, currently set to debut on December 22nd, 2028 – just under two years after the fourth picture takes its bow.

I Think We’re Heading Into A Two-Part Sonic The Hedgehog Cliffhanger

I must admit, the late 2025 announcement of Sonic the Hedgehog’s fifth cinematic entry seemed a bit surprising. As Sonic the Hedgehog 4 just entered production earlier this month, one of two prospects seem to be at work here. There is the possibility that a spin-off project was already in the works; say maybe a Knuckles Chaotix movie; but I don’t think that’s the case.

No, I think we’re getting a Sonic the Hedgehog 4 – Part Two. With alternating “Good” and “Bad” timelines making up Sonic CD’s universe, I think Ben Schwartz’s 2027 return as Sonic is going to end on a downer note. Think a bummer on the same level as the end of Avengers: Infinity War; where the Wachowskis are dead, Knuckles and Tails are put into robots, and Shadow is deprived of his beloved Latinas.

Just like Back to the Future Part II and III before it, epics involving skewed timelines are ripe for two-part resolutions. So going for another entry that shoots for all the marbles (and potentially closes out Jim Carrey’s Robotnik arc once and for all) feels pretty cozy. That’s especially valid when you consider a universal truth Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is bringing us ever closer to addressing.

The Sonic The Hedgehog Universe Can Only Get Bigger

As we saw with Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s alternate concept art, the scope of this story is getting large. With so many characters yet to be introduced from the video game canon, there’s a potential for tons of stories in the future. So instead of trying to shoehorn things into a rushed package, why not give the people what they want – more Sonic movies? There’s plenty of time for my crackpot theory to be debunked faster than you can say “Meow?”

However, we can now start the clock to Sonic the Hedgehog 4’s theatrical release in a year. But if you want to fill the hours between now and March 19, 2027 with some research – head over to Paramount+ for all three previous Sonic movies, and the Knuckles spinoff series. Last, but not least, any shifts in the timeline will be catalogued in THS’ Movie News archives – so don’t forget to check back and see what’s new in the timestream. I mean, we have to learn who Ben Kingsley is playing at some point, don’t we?
