Daemons of the Shadow Realm starts off quietly and peacefully in Ep. 1 “Asa and Yuru”, but it escalates very quickly. It starts off as though it’s a typical medieval Japanese fantasy adventure, but literally halfway through the episode, it gets very bloody and violent, with a massive amount of death everywhere. Clearly, you can tell that this is by the same author as Fullmetal Alchemist with that odd mixture of peace and war. I’m already looking forward to what happens next with bated breath.
Daemons of the Shadow Realm Ep. 1 “Asa and Yuru”: Details in Brief

Daemons of the Shadow Realm Ep. 1 “Asa and Yuru” is the upcoming first episode of this equally as upcoming dark fantasy action adventure anime series. Said anime is the anime adaptation of the manga of the same name by Hiromu Arakawa (Fullmetal Alchemist, Silver Spoon, The Heroic Legend of Arslan).
Bones Film (Fullmetal Alchemist, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Ouran High School Host Club, My Hero Academia) is the animation studio behind this anime. Masahiro Andō is the director behind this anime, with Noboru Takagi as the writer, and Kenichiro Suehiro as the composer for the music.
Speaking of that music, the opening theme song for Daemons of the Shadow Realm is “Time to Fly” by Vaundy. Meanwhile, “Let’s Fly” by yama is the ending theme song.
Synopsis
Alas, Daemons of the Shadow Realm has not yet made its debut as of this writing. Ep. 1 “Asa and Yuru” will make its simulcast debut on April 4, 2026 exclusively on Crunchyroll. So for people not wishing to be even slightly spoiled, here’s the official synopsis of this anime as a whole from Crunchyroll below:
In a world where certain humans command mighty supernatural duos called Daemons, it is the birthright of “the children who sunder day and night”—twins Yuru and Asa—to rule over these powerful entities.
Separated from a young age and unaware of the truth of their birth, brother and sister must fight to make their way back to each other, claim their birthright, and save the world…
Daemons of the Shadow Realm Ep. 1 “Asa and Yuru”: The Good

Hiromu Arakawa has long been writing some amazing stories for decades now, with her most famous being Fullmetal Alchemist. Fullmetal Alchemist began all the way back in 2001, but Daemons of the Shadow Realm proves that she still got it in terms of story-writing skill.
The first half of Ep. 1 “Asa and Yuru” is essentially a slice of life story depicting the ordinary life of Yuru (voiced by Kensho Ono (JP)) living his ordinary life with his little sister Asa in his medieval Japanese village…well, almost ordinary. Even in the first few minutes of the episode, you get the feeling that something is off about this village. I can’t say more without spoiling things, but it’s quite easy to tell that there’s something more going on in this apparently medieval village that wouldn’t be out of place in a Japanese jidaigeki period drama. Complete with some fairly detailed depictions of rice farming, which is quite appropriate for Arakawa considering that she herself came from a farming background.
The second half of the episode is where that peaceful life ends though. War and violence comes to this small village in a most unexpected way. Again, I can’t reveal specifics, but we see numerous villagers dying in very bloody ways from mysterious armed attackers. The attack culminates in Yuru running back to try to save his sister, only for her to be apparently dead…maybe? This is where things get very strange for the story in some wonderful ways, but you will have to see for yourself when this episode streams on April 4.
Story aside though, the animation quality is amazingly high. Bones Film and their animation team are really going all out in their animation quality here, with individual strands of hair and grasses blowing in the wind. The fluid movements of the cast themselves really show off a very high budget for that animation. Heck, there’s an exquisitely detailed scene at the beginning of a pheasant blinking with its nictitating membrane and moving in little jerks and twitches just like a real bird would. Without a doubt, Bones Film are giving us a very good-looking anime to go with the story.
Daemons of the Shadow Realm Ep. 1 “Asa and Yuru”: The Bad
Honestly, the only bad part here is the cliffhanger Ep. 1 “Asa and Yuru” leaves us on. The episode literally ends in the middle of hostilities and in the middle of some serious plot twists about the magical things in this universe. The desire to see the next episode just to find out more is through the roof for me. I’m now just eagerly awaiting that episode, and I’m almost certain you will be too.
