Disney is back to actively developing Tangled for live-action. Early development has been restarted according to Deadline. Tangled is the latest animated hit for the studio to be reimagined as a live-action entry. As an added bit of intrigue for the film, Scarlett Johansson is being considered as Mother Gothel in a major role. Michael Gracey is the director tabbed for the live-action version of Tangled and the script is being handled by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson.
As Deadline’s reporting indicates, Disney originally paused development due to the live-action Snow White’s box office performance. But, the dynamite debut and box office run for Lilo & Stitch probably changed their tune. It will be interesting to see which of the former animated features get tabbed for a trip to live-action going forward. The more modern titles seem to resonate with audiences a bit more. That likely doesn’t have anything to do with subject matter and more about which movies were already hits!
Tangled Live-Action Movie Circles Scarlett Johansson

It’s been a busy few years for Jared Bush. He’s gone from a Disney Channel creator in the mid 2010’s to a massive force on Walt Disney Animation Studios’ creative team. Bush co-directed Zootopia and helped write Moana. Now, he is the Chief Creative Officer at the studio and setting about leaning-into the business of capitalizing on some established hits for Disney.
“I am so deeply grateful to Bob Iger and Alan Bergman for their faith in me, and thankful to Jennifer for her leadership and for her generous support as she embarks on the next chapters of ‘Frozen,’” Bush said in a statement when he assumed the post. “Disney Animation is home to some of the greatest stories and characters of the past century, and I’m so excited to work with all of our filmmakers, artists, and Disney Animation team members as we shape the future of this legendary studio together.”
