Labubu is getting a movie from Sony Pictures and the Internet is losing it right now. The Hollywood Reporter says that the KPOP Demon Hunters studio secured the rights to a feature film around the eponymous doll brand. Sony is thinking franchise for Labubu, but will the fervor last long enough for the project to make it out to a raving public. THR says that there’s no creative team attached at this time, but you can bet some big names will be jockeying for position.

For the uninitiated, Labubu is a doll brand that’s spread like wildfire in pop culture lately. Largely in part to the blind box nature of getting the toys. (Artificial scarcity is still working like a charm folks!) Add in the fact that these dolls are reselling for thousands on different marketplaces, and it makes sense that Sony would want to be in on the business. Pop Mart’s brand has exploded as a result of the partnership.

It’s not too wild to call Labubu the biggest toy craze of this decade so far. We’ve got sports stars and fashion icons openly repping the toys on the biggest stages imaginable. Perfect Magazine sat down with Kasing Lung earlier this year. The creative force behind Labubu is overwhelmed by the success just like everyone else.

Yambau explained, “I never dreamed people would put the charms on their designer bags. In the past, before the keychain plush dolls were released, people would bring the larger vinyl dolls with them on vacation, in cafés and restaurants. I saw a lot of this on Instagram.”

“Paris, Los Angeles, Australia… They would take photos of the dolls at famous tourist spots,” he added. “I think that’s how they became popular at first. The keychain plush dolls are much smaller and easier to carry. People can hang them off anywhere – you can hang them off a bag.”That Hashtag Show has up-to-the-minute Movie news for you.
