DAN DA DAN kicks off its long-awaited second season with some just as long-awaited horror in its first two episodes. All revolving around not just the Evil Eye, but a whole bunch of evil eyes in general. And yet, the official Evil Eye (TM) doesn’t seem to be as evil as people in the story claim he is…or is he that evil? I suppose that’s what we’ll find out.

DAN DA DAN Season 2 Ep. 1-2: Details in Brief

The light is definitely not something you want to look at.

DAN DA DAN season 2 Ep. 1-2 (aka. Ep. 13 “Like, This Is the Legend of the Giant Snake” and Ep. 14 “The Evil Eye”) are the first two episodes of the second season of this action horror-comedy anime series. Said anime is the anime adaptation of the manga of the same name by Yukinobu Tatsu. Said anime also comes just seven months after the finale of the first season, which you can read about in my reviews of all 12 episodes of that first season here.

Science SARU (Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!, Star Wars: Visions “Akakiri” and “TB-01”, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off) returns as the animation studio for this second season of the anime. Fūga Yamashiro returns as the director but is also now co-directing with Abel Góngora, with Hiroshi Seko also returning as the writer.

Synopsis

I see the horror comes with a hefty dose of fire in this season.

Alas, DAN DA DAN season 2 is an ongoing anime series. In fact, Ep. 2 “The Evil Eye” only just premiered on July 10, 2025 on Crunchyroll, Netflix, and Hulu. Thus, if you haven’t watched it yet, here’s the official synopsis of the anime as a whole from Crunchyroll to tease you about the plot:

“Momo is a high school girl born into a family of spirit mediums. Her classmate Okarun is an occult fanatic. Encountering overwhelming and bizarre phenomena one after another, Momo awakens her hidden powers and Okarun gains the power of a curse. They now set out to help Momo’s childhood friend Jiji, who is tormented by ghosts, by heading over to his home for exorcism… What will be the next bizarre phenomenon they face there!?”

Without a doubt, it’s the story that keeps me watching the first two episodes of DAN DA DAN season 2. It’s just such a well-done horror-comedy anime, filled with enough action to satisfy even the most discerning of action junkies. And despite the mixture of horror and comedy, it’s genuinely horrifying at times. Bear in mind, these are the episodes in which suicides and attempted suicides are depicted with alarming frequency. All due to outside influences, mind you. Make of that what you will. However, do note that yes, this anime (and by extension, Yukinobu Tatsu) does get into some pretty heavy subject matter with its horror. It’s what makes that story so good though, so if you bear with that in mind, you’re going to have oodles of fun with it.

However, the story isn’t the only thing good about these first two episodes. The animation from Science SARU is just as top-notch as in the previous season. In particular, the action scenes involving Okarun (voiced by Natsuki Hanae (JP) and A.J. Beckles (EN)), Momo (voiced by Shion Wakayama (JP) and Abby Trott (EN)), and Jiji (voiced by Kaito Ishikawa (JP) and Aleks Le (EN)) all feature some very fluid animation combined with some insane animated stunts. At least some of the action involves a hypervelocity magic soccer ball, which makes the fight scenes particular energetic even without taking into account the giant snakey monster lurking in the background.

Heck, that animation even contributes to the horror of the episodes. Let me say that seeing bodies swaying in the wind and burning like kindling has never looked more horrifying thanks to Science SARU’s animation team. Honestly, this Evil Eye arc so far is one of the best arcs simply due to how much graphic horror is in it.

Honestly though, the same heavy subjects that the first two episodes of DAN DA DAN season 2 deals in might be a turn-off for some viewers. Yes, the show uses them for horror. However, they are still pretty heavy subjects. Heck, in Ep. 1, Momo faces some extremely graphic sexual assault threats, which could definitely be a turn-off for a lot of people. However, if you’re willing to overlook them or take them at their horror face value, then you might find that this anime is quite enjoyable in spite of that heavy subject matter.

Or in some cases, even because of how the anime treats those heavy subject matters. Momo may the subject of the sexual assault, but she clearly isn’t just victimized. She fights back against the assault with every last breath she has, and makes sure that her sexual assailants pay for that attempt. She gets some assistance in the form of some implied help from Turbo Granny (voiced by Mayumi Tanaka (JP) and Barbara Goodson (EN)), but otherwise, it’s her fight to fight, and she wins quite handily. To me, it’s quite a refreshing take on women being depicted as merely victims in sexual assault. Your mileage may vary here though, so you be the judge of that.
