May I Ask for One Final Thing? gives us a bit of a break with Ep. 5 “May I Clobber This Asshole Prince?”. All as a reprieve from all the action and drama from the previous episode. But while this episode does feature loads of fluff and romantic comedy, it also thickens up the plot just a bit in preparation for the drama of the next episode…as well as Scarlet punching more corrupt nobles in the face.

Synopsis

You can tell by the end of this episode that Julius is either a troll or a masochist.

Alas, May I Ask for One Final Thing? is an ongoing anime series. In fact, May I Ask for One Final Thing? Oh, so he can be romantic to Scarlet when he wants to be.

Despite the lack of Scarlet punching anything or anyone in May I Ask for One Final Thing? Ep. 5 “May I Clobber This Asshole Prince?” (save for in the opening minutes), the story is still the best part about it. Especially for fans of slice of life and romantic comedy, because that’s basically the vast majority of this episode. We actually get to see Scarlet (voiced by Asami Seto (JP) and Morgan Lauré (EN)) in a nice, relaxed environment that most consists of her recovering from her beatdowns of the corrupt. The only thing that’s not recovering quite right is apparently her magic, which reveals some very interesting limitations on what would otherwise be a very overpowered superpower. It’s rare to see such limitations in fantasy anime like this, which makes this limitation a refreshing addition to the genre.

All in all, this episode is a very interesting exploration of Scarlet’s personality, and it’s a very interesting exploration of the personality of Julius (voiced by Wataru Katoh (JP) and Reagan Murdock (EN)) as well. He was already an interesting character before this episode, but this one really launches a major exploration of his personality. While he does seem to genuinely care about Scarlet, it’s also pretty clear that he’s a troll…or a masochist. But whichever is the case, he’s definitely a far more complex character than he appears to be, which perfectly complements Scarlet’s own complexity as a character.

Which all adds to the complexity of the overall plot itself. It’s this episode that reveals we have a conspiracy going on involving Terenezza (voiced by Ai Kakuma (JP) and Emily Neves (EN)). In fact, she’s the ringleader of an entire conspiracy centered around giving her a “happy ending”. All of which is all shaping up for her to be the villainous counterpart to Scarlet, and as we all know: a good story always needs a good villain.

Oh, and all this is happening with Liden Films Kyoto Studio’s quality animation from their animation team. The beatdowns in those opening minutes of this episode wouldn’t look nearly as good without their help. The smooth and fluid animation during her beatdown of the slaver leader combined with the exquisite choreography produced by the multiple simultaneous punches (produced by a dose of time manipulation magic) results in a visually complex and satisfying fight scene that will please action fans to no small degree.

Never mind. He’s cruising for a bruising.

Alas, my one and only complaint about May I Ask for One Final Thing? Ep. 5 “May I Clobber This Asshole Prince?” is still the lack of yuri. I feel like this entire anime is just begging for yuri. The very strong female protagonist (both figuratively and literally) is just a perfect recipe for yuri, but alas, there doesn’t appear to be any yuri thus far. Here’s hoping that perhaps, we might get some yuri in the future.

Aside from the lack of yuri, the action in here is short but splendid.
