Ep. 9 to Ep. 13 of May I Ask for One Final Thing? confirm that this action-packed anime is on the lighter and more comedic side in terms of story. Even when things are getting genuinely dire and horrific, Scarlet doesn’t lose sight of herself. Specifically: she never loses her love of beating the shit out of people she despises.

May I Ask for One Final Thing? Ep. 9-13: The Good

Since this review of May I Ask for One Final Thing? covers so many episodes, we will break down each episode below, starting with:

Ep. 9 “May I Explain That This Is Not Something That Just Anyone Can Do?”

She needs to beat some villains up to work off the sleepiness.

May I Ask for One Final Thing? Ep. 9 is perhaps one of the most interesting episodes in terms of story. All because it reveals that Saint Diana/Sanya (voiced by Kaori Maeda (JP) and Jad Saxton (EN)) had been the one leaking the info about their whereabouts and intentions to the other side through Dios (voiced by Jin Ogasawara (JP) and Joshua Waters (EN)). All due to a really suspicious promise that doing so would allow her to restore her lost blessing.

It really highlights that Diana is really just a kid here who has been living a pretty sheltered life after her unexpected rise to sainthood from commoner status, and thus lacks the risk assessment skills to tell that this is a really, really bad idea. All on top of this episode revealing Diana’s backstory via an extended flashback sequence and how it relates to the present day, revealing a fascinating story in the works here before Scarlet (voiced by Asami Seto (JP) and Morgan Lauré (EN)) finally wakes up and does something about the problems here.

Ep. 10 “May I Cook This Thick Cut of Pork Through With Body Punches?”

Her kicks are just as deadly as her fists.

Here in Ep. 10 is when May I Ask for One Final Thing? turns back into an action-comedy anime. All with Scarlet bashing monsters left and right, and having the time of her life while doing so. It makes for a simple story, but a most entertaining one at that.

The choreography of those fight scenes are where it gets interesting. Each fight is treated as a dance sequence both in how it’s animated and by Scarlet herself. Sure, the spinning is a bit exaggerated to make it suitable for combat, but it is in essence a dance. With the end of the combat scene being treated as the end of a dance sequence to boot.

And despite the violence in this episode, all of it is treated only semi-seriously at best. Yes, the stakes are high and very real. However, the way Scarlet approaches the fights with her usual devil may care and jovial attitude is what turns the fights from what would’ve potentially been deadly serious encounters into light-hearted and comedic bloodbaths…despite how contradictory those words sound.

Ep. 11 “As These Appear Undercooked, May I Turn Them Into Mince Meat?”

On the surface, Ep. 11 may appear to be another light-hearted beat ’em up episode as Scarlet clears a path for Dios and Nanaka (voiced by Miyu Tomita (JP) and Lexi Nieto (EN)). However, in between the comedic action is a surprisingly and deadly serious political story that Dios and Nanaka are attempting to resolve. It’s that interplay of serious politics and light-hearted comedic action that makes this episode a wonderfully complex story to watch.

Especially due to the plot twist at the end that reveals the full extent of Terenezza’s (voiced by Ai Kakuma (JP) and Emily Neves (EN)) “Charm” magic, which is effectively mind control magic. It’s not even just limited to direct mind control. It can also force the victim to carry out complex commands even after a delay when a specific trigger is met. It certainly makes her a far more potent villain than she would appear to be.

Ep. 12 “May I Pay Off the Massive Debt My Fists Have Accrued?”

May I Ask For One Final Thing?
Now that’s a terrifying look her enemies have to face.

As the penultimate episode of May I Ask for One Final Thing?, Ep. 12 truly delivers in the style of this anime. All in the form of comedically action-packed goodness mixed in with some deadly serious drama going on as a counterbalance. Interestingly, the action doesn’t really focus on Scarlet struggling as would be the case in most action. Rather, it’s played for comedy whenever Scarlet is the one fighting, and then for everyone else, it’s deadly serious drama precisely because they lack her power. Well, aside from Julius (voiced by Wataru Katoh (JP) and Reagan Murdock (EN)), who can more than hold his own in a fight. That ability to hold his own in the fight really sets things up for the next episode, but I digress.

Interestingly, this episode is also when Terenezza herself gets some character exploration. It reveals her past when she had been but a mundane girl in Japan, where she developed a bizarre sense of entitlement to happiness while also harboring festering feelings of jealousy towards anyone who even remotely slighted her. Her being given mind control powers by Palmia only exacerbated that personality, resulting in her currently wanting to violently overthrow an entire nation just to get her own “happy ending”. It’s that combination of personality traits that makes her a wonderful villain to hate, resulting in us cheering for Scarlet to beat the daylights out of her.

Ep. 13 “May I Ask For One Final Thing?”

Why does this scene look vaguely sapphic out of context?

With this last episode, May I Ask for One Final Thing? concludes the story in a hilarious epic fashion…and even introducing some serious drama and horror into the mix to boot. I have to admit: the sight of Terenezza being puppeted around by Palmia and speaking in an emotionless monotone is quite unnerving. Honestly, her going on a tantrum is less creepy than that. The strange thing here though is Scarlet’s unwillingness to kill Terenezza. Instead, she wishes to keep her alive…so that she can properly feel the pain from Scarlet’s fists. It’s an odd form of mercy, to be sure, but it’s an interesting exploration of Scarlet’s character there.

Everything after that is practically a calming relaxation episode. All in spite of Scarlet threatening to inflict violence on Julius for a bit of deception/manipulation during the fight with Terenezza to boot. Alas, we will only be able to find out what happened if Liden Films Kyoto Studio ever decides to make a second season of May I Ask for One Final Thing?.

May I Ask for One Final Thing? Ep. 9-13: The Bad

Clearly, Scarlet is the leading lady here, despite what the finale seems to imply.

Some portions of the finale episode contain content that might prove to be the most divisive of the entire series of May I Ask for One Final Thing? thus far. Specifically: the idea that Julius needs to protect Scarlet with his newly upgraded magic. The entire anime has been about female empowerment. Heck, Scarlet’s entire story arc is about her punching out the lights of those who’ve angered her. For Julius to become the shining hero who saves her feels like it’s the antithesis of Scarlet’s story.

One thing that mullifies this is Julius willingly handing over the power to Scarlet in order to let her defeat Terenezza and her goddess Palmia, and even then, there’s some patriarchal issues there. The other thing that mullifies this is that for the entire story, Scarlet and Julius have had an equal relationship with each other. It’s an odd relationship that sees them engaging in verbal and sometimes physical duels with each other, but it’s quite equal. That plot point about Julius’s magic does seem to fit in with that theme of equality in some ways, but it’s definitely something that makes your eyebrows raise regardless.
