Cosmic Princess Kaguya will be a very peculiar upcoming anime film on Netflix by all indication. For starters, it will be the debut work of Shingo Yamashita, who did some amazing work on the opening sequences for Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1, Chainsaw Man, and Urusei Yatsura; with animation by Studio Colorido (Penguin Highway, A Whisker Away) in collaboration with Yamashita’s Studio Chromato, and character designs by Hechima (The Idolmaster Gakuen) and Akihiro Nagae (Drifting Home). As for the anime film itself, Netflix describes the anime film’s story as:
“Inspired by The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, the film reimagines Japan’s oldest folktale with a modern touch by integrating music, fantasy, and contemporary animation. Set in the virtual realm of Tsukuyomi, the story unfolds as a live performance marrying original music with Yamashita’s signature style of polished visuals, emotive pacing, and dynamic 3D camerawork to boldly transform this classic tale for a new generation. The voice cast includes Yuko Natsuyoshi as Kaguya, Anna Nagase as Iroha, and Saori Hayami as Yachiyo.”
Which brings me to the point of this story. Netflix is proud to announce the upcoming debut of this original anime film: Cosmic Princess Kaguya. The anime film will make its Netflix debut on January 22, 2025. As part of this announcement, Netflix is showing off a special trailer, a new key art, and even still images from that trailer for this upcoming anime film. The visuals look aesthetically pleasing, the animation look very smooth and fluid, and the music sounds like it’s coming right out of a high quality idol anime, Vocaloid performance, or Disney film. Honestly, if you enjoy the musical nature of Disney films, this might appeal to you as well.
