Nyaight of the Living Cat Ep. 1 and 2 are a great look into just how absolutely hilarious this kitty horror-comedy is. With just how much everyone is taking the apocatlypse so seriously and how idiotic most everyone is, it’s impossible to take the anime seriously. Fortunately, that’s the perfect way to enjoy this wonderfully cat-centric anime about their adorable takeover of this cat-crazy world.

Synopsis

The overly affectionate kitty swarm is coming for us.

Alas, Nyaight of the Living Cat has not yet made its debut. That will have to wait for July 7, 2025; when the anime will finally start airing and streaming. Thus, you will all be getting the official synopsis from Crunchyroll to tease the plot a bit below:

“Run! The adorable cats are here. In 20XX, the world is dominated by cats. A virus which turns anyone who touches a cat into a cat has spread into a worldwide nyandemic. Cats rub against people, turning them into cats. Can humanity fight their urge to pet cats to survive in this cat-ridden world?”

Toe beans are always wonderful additions to any kitty scene.

Honestly, it’s the story of Nyaight of the Living Cat Ep. 1-2 that deserves a mention here for how good the first two episodes are. All for just how absolutely, mindbogglingly insane and hilariously silly that story is. It’s basically a zombie apocalypse show, but with kitties instead. In fact, the kitties don’t even do anything particularly violent in this apocalypse. They’re just a bit more affectionate than usual, and that is enough to cause this apocalypse.

The humor in all this comes from a combination of just how seriously everyone takes the kitty apocalypse, and how just utterly moronic everyone is in their seriousness. And I do mean everyone. They’re either outright idiots, or are completely cat-crazy. Usually both, especially given that this is apparently an alternate world in which 90% of every human on the planet owns a cat, and the entire world is so completely crazy for those kitties. I mean it. There’s cat-themed merchandise and consumer goods everywhere, and even whole schools with cats in their names. You can definitely tell that this entire anime was made for lovers of all things kitty, and it’s indeed quite the enjoyable treat for us.

Adding to all that is the animation from OLM Team Masuda and the art style itself from Mecha-Roots. A good portion of the comedy comes from much of the cast being dominated by some very muscle-bound male characters. Seriously, most of the male characters look like they would be right at home in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. And yet, they all fall into gibbering, cooing cuteness proximity pieces around the ubiquitous kitties in the world. The cognitive dissonance in all that is tickling my funny bone, and it will hopefully tickle yours as well.

No! Not the Terminator reference!

Alas, there is one thing I would like to complain about in the first two episodes of Nyaight of the Living Cat. That would be the widespread use of CGI for the kitties. Now granted, you can easily understand why they did it. There’s just so many kitties in just these two episodes alone that using traditional hand-drawing techniques for all of them would be incredibly time and budget-consuming. It’s no wonder that they would take shortcuts like this.

Unfortunately, while you can easily understand why they do this, it still makes the CGI kitties look…not exactly bad, but not as good as they could’ve been. This becomes especially apparent when you see the lovely hand-drawn kitties next to the not-as-good CGI kitties in the same scene. There’s a definitely visual dissonance in the scene when you see it, and is part of my reason for not giving this anime as high a score as it deserves.

Aside from that one complaint, there is the issue of the action. It’s all comically kitty-centric. There’s no blood or anything, thank Bast. Nay, the action is all in kitty fun, despite how seriously everyone takes it. If you want bloody and serious (and most certainly kitty-less) action, then you might want to check out Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no YaibaKaiju No. 8DDDDDAN DA DANSword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online IIZenshuSolo LevelingBlack Butler, and/or even a few episodes of Apocalypse Hotel. Those anime should have more than enough action to satisfy that evil little action junkie in you until you come back to the floofy embrace of the kitties.
