Spy x Family Season 3 finally ends the aftermath of the bus hijacking…for now with Ep. 47 “Austin’s Troubles | A Normal Mixer | Moon Landing”, while also giving us a look at what Yor does with her office coworkers. However, it’s Ep. 48 “Extreme Level 3 Situation” when the action really heats up. After all, it’s when WISE and the SSS directly face off against each other in a spy action thriller battle, with deadly consequences for Operation Strix if Loid and his comrades fail.

Things are about to get serious again for the Forgers.

Spy x Family Season 3 Ep. 47 “Austin’s Troubles | A Normal Mixer | Moon Landing” and Ep. 48 “Extreme Level 3 Situation” are the 10th and 11th episodes (you can read my reviews of Ep. 1Ep. 2Ep. 3Ep. 4Ep. 5Ep. 6Ep. 7, and Ep. 8-9 here) of the third season of this spy action-comedy anime, and the 47th and 48th overall. Said anime is the anime adaptation of the ongoing Spy x Family manga series by Tatsuya Endo.

Wit Studio (Attack on Titan S1-3, Ranking of KingsSuicide Squad Isekai) and Cloverworks (The Promised NeverlandBocchi the Rock!My Dress-Up Darling) remains the animation studios behind this anime, just as they have for the first two seasons. In fact, longtime readers at THS will recall that we reviewed the first and second seasons, plus the Spy x Family Code: White anime film as well. The staff is a bit different this time around though. Yukiko Imai has replaced Kazuhiro Furuhashi and Takahiro Harada as the director, but all other staff are reprising their roles.

The opening theme song for this third season of Spy x Family Season 3 is “Hi o Mamoru” (灯を護る) by Spitz. Meanwhile, “Actor” by Lilas Ikuta is the ending theme song for the same.

Synopsis

Alas, it takes a while before the PTSD sets in. It’s all in the name.

Alas, Spy x Family Season 3 is still an ongoing anime series. In fact, Ep. 48 “Extreme Level 3 Situation” only just premiered on December 13, 2025 on Crunchyroll and Hulu. Thus, to avoid spoilers, here’s the synopsis of the episodes featured in this review below:

Ep. 47 “Austin’s Troubles | A Normal Mixer | Moon Landing”: “Mr. Austin is having nightmares after the busjacking incident and Yor goes out with her coworkers.”

Ep. 48 “Extreme Level 3 Situation”: “Twilight and Yuri get an emergency summons from their respective agencies.”

Spy x Family Season 3 Ep. 47-48: The Good

Since we’re going to be covering two episodes in this review of Spy x Family Season 3 Ep. 47-48, this part will be divided into two segments. Starting with:

Ep. 47 “Austin’s Troubles | A Normal Mixer | Moon Landing”

Notice how everyone is drinking beer, save for Yor’s…blue drink.

Spy x Family Season 3 Ep. 47 “Austin’s Troubles | A Normal Mixer | Moon Landing” is a series of vignettes like the usual formula the anime engages in. It allows the anime to explore its setting as a series of interrelated segments, each one giving us a look into individual characters that are featured in each vignette.

From one of Eden Academy’s teachers being treated for possible PTSD by Loid (voiced by Takuya Eguchi (JP) and Alex Organ (EN)), to Yor (voiced by Saori Hayami (JP) and Natalie Van Sistine (EN)) going on a drink with her coworkers and bonding with them, to Anya (voiced by Atsumi Tanezaki (JP) and Megan Shipman (EN)) finding a surprising amount of common ground with one of Damian’s friends, each one gives us a look into their daily lives that reveals more of their characters. Truly, this is the epitome of the slice of life genre.

Those vignettes also show off the high level of animation quality that Wit Studio and Cloverworks regularly does for this anime. In particular, the animation sequence where Yor imagines an epic boss battle with Loid in her drunken state deserves praise purely for the insanity of the sequence combined with the fluid action sequences. The fact that it only happens in Yor’s imagination is the sweet topping on this animated cake.

Ep. 48 “Extreme Level 3 Situation”

However, it’s Spy x Family Season 3 Ep. 48 “Extreme Level 3 Situation” that really takes the cake in terms of overall quality, and it’s likely a story arc that readers of the manga have been waiting for. This is the part of the story that delves back into the spy/espionage action thriller side of the anime. Not only that, but this episode ups the ante by upping the body count. We see three people die onscreen, and a fourth is even implied to be on their way to a gruesome end via torture. All of which are designed to establish that Ostania’s State Security Service (SSS) are as cold, ruthless, brutal, and effective as WISE are. Thus, it establishes them as a peer opponent to WISE in a battle of equals, and raising the stakes dramatically as a result.

Adding to this battle of equals is the gorgeous animation once again. It’s especially apparent when Ostania’s top agent pulls off a triple kill in very quick succession with some very fluid and dynamic action sequences involving quite a bit of gymnastics mixed with brutal violence, like a cross between the Matrix films and the John Wick films. It will certainly entertain the action junkies in the audience quite a bit.

Spy x Family Season 3 Ep. 47-48: The Bad

Who this is bad for is a plot twist up to the very end.

Ironically, the strong point of the story of Spy x Family Season 3 Ep. 47 “Austin’s Troubles | A Normal Mixer | Moon Landing” is also its weakest point. The vignette style of the story may be off-putting to some people due to a lack of coherent storyline across them. The short length of each vignette also means that they feel much shorter than a full-length episode, and thus there’s not much time to develop the characters as much as some would like. Also, the lack of action in them may also be off-putting if you like action and nothing else.

Meanwhile, Ep. 48 “Extreme Level 3 Situation” does have a peculiarity to it that fans of action films might notice. Despite how brutally violent that action is, there’s no visible blood and gore. It might be to preserve the age rating of the anime, but the lack of visible blood and gore does dilute the action a bit. It’s the quality of the action despite the lack of blood and gore that makes it worth watching.
