TRIGUN STARGAZE gives us a look into the mental state of Legato Bluesummers in his battle with Vash and co. in Ep. 10 “Martyr”. And really, he’s not in a good place mentally even as he engages in a vicious fight with them. Especially with that fanatical willingness to die for his god Millions Knives.

TRIGUN STARGAZE Ep. 10 “Martyr”: Details in Brief

Sanity is overrated for the villains.

TRIGUN STARGAZE Ep. 10 “Martyr” is the tenth episode (you can read my reviews of Ep. 1Ep. 2Ep. 3Ep. 4Ep. 5Ep. 6Ep. 7Ep. 8, and Ep. 9 here) of the second and final season of this reboot anime, with TRIGUN STAMPEDE serving as the first season. Said reboot anime is the reboot of the 1998 Trigun anime series, which itself was the anime adaptation of the manga of the same name by Yasuhiro Nightow.

Studio Orange (Land of the LustrousBEASTARSLeviathan) returns as the animation studio behind this anime. Interestingly though, Kenji Mutō is not returning as the director, and none of the writers from TRIGUN STAMPEDE are returning either. Instead, Masako Satō will be the director, with Kazuyuki Fudeyasu as the writer. Tatsuya Kato does return as the composer though.

The opening theme song for TRIGUN STARGAZE is “Picaresque Hero” by ano. Meanwhile, “Stardust” by FOMARE is the ending theme song.

Synopsis

Alas, not many smiles in this episode, and for understandable reasons.

Alas, TRIGUN STARGAZE is an ongoing anime series. In fact, Ep. 10 “Martyr” only just made its debut on March 14, 2026 exclusively on Crunchyroll. Thus, to prevent spoilers for those who haven’t watch this episode yet, here’s the official synopsis from Crunchyroll below:

“Vash and Knives, and their respective allies, face off in a final showdown at the crash site where it all started.”

Well, he’s not good, per se.

The star of the show is Ep. 10 “Martyr” is clearly Legato Bluesummers (voiced by Koki Uchiyama (JP)), as you can tell just from this episode’s title. Fortunately, this episode is also really good at showing off not only his personality, but his motivations as well. And as you might expect: he is motivated entirely by religious devotion to Millions Knives (voiced by Ryūji Satō (JP)). In fact, this episode makes it clear that mere membership in Knives’ Eye of Michael organization requires that each member worship not only Knives as a living god, but also worshipping Vash (voiced by Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (JP)) in the same way.

This creates an interesting contradiction here because Legato is definitely not worshipping Vash. If anything, it’s almost a form of anti-worship. Legato views Vash as the “God of Betrayal”, and seems to treat Vash similarly to how Chernobog was allegedly worshipped as a god of misfortune. Almost like a demon to ward off, really. All of which apparently goes against the tenets of his religion, which makes for an interestingly bizarre contrast with him.

And yet, despite how obviously unhinged Legato is, he does make some good points to Vash. Apparently, Vash hadn’t been making an effort to understand Knives at all…or at least, Legato tried to convince Vash that he hadn’t done that. While yes, Vash has been focused entirely on stopping Knives from committing genocide on humanity, it’s not as though he made no effort whatsoever to understand Knives’ motivations. In fact, Vash and Knives literally had an argument with each other over that a few episodes ago, so I’m not sure what Legato is going on about. Maybe it’s secretly a message to try dialogue again? We shall see in the next episode of TRIGUN STARGAZE.

In the meantime, we can admire the very high quality and smooth CGI animation during the fight scenes, as typical for Orange’s work, as well as the gorgeous background art. The models of the crashed SEEDS starships rusting away in the desert is quite the haunting site.

TRIGUN STARGAZE Ep. 10 “Martyr”: The Bad

Not a bad look, regardless of the canon deviation.

Alas, if you’re already predisposed to being against CGI animation in anime due to watching too many badly animated ones, then Ep. 10 “Martyr”. It is entirely CGI animated, and although it’s animated by one of the best CGI animated studios in existence, it’s still noticeably CGI. If you don’t like that art style in general, then this episode and anime are not for you.

Fans of Yasuhiro Nightow’s original canon might also find this episode not to your liking. There are just so many deviations from his original story here. From Legato surviving his forcing Vash to shoot him via a literal deus ex machina to Gray the Ninelives being revealed to be piloted by small, furry creatures, it’s a noticeably different story from what Nightow wrote in 1995. At the very least, Oragne kept the core message of “Ideals vs. Practicality” alive, so that helps. However, if you think it deviates from canon too much, then this episode is probably not for you either.
