Witch Watch Ep. 9 “Dear Kara / New Friends / Date With the Knight” gives us another vignette episode. However, this is one series of vignette with a lot of heart in them. In fact, at least one of the vignettes has so much heart in it that it will move you to tears.

Synopsis

Well…mostly responsibly.

Alas, Witch Watch is still an ongoing anime series. In fact, Witch Watch Ep. 9 “Dear Kara / New Friends / Date With the Knight” made its debut just on June 1, 2025. Thus, we shall be giving you the official synopsis of this episode from Crunchyroll (you can also watch it on Netflix and Hulu) to tease the story without too many spoilers below:

“Nico and Morihito were at their classmate Kara Minami’s house. Kara had invited them over so they could recover Kara’s shredded up letter. Nico tells Kara that in order to use the spell “Witch Recovery,” the parts of the item need to be somewhat gathered. Since there were other shredded pieces of paper in the pile, it would be difficult for the spell to succeed. The letter that Kara wanted to have Nico recover is a letter from her departed mother that her father had put in the shredder.”

They really went all out for this episode. Look at those fireworks.

Witch Watch Ep. 9 “Dear Kara / New Friends / Date With the Knight” has really gone all out on the story. It’s why it’s my favorite part of this episode. In particular, the first vignette, “Dear Kara”, get a kudos from me. It basically slaps you in the face with feels like a random episode of Stargate SG-1, making you cry your eyes out.The fact that it does so only 10 minutes into the episode makes it all the more impressive, and especially since much of the anime up until now has been nothing but romantic comedy, emphasis on the comedy.

Speaking of which, the comedy in this episode continues to be hilarious. Amazingly, all in spite of much of that comedy in this episode being highly esoteric. Specifically, the “New Friends” vignette. It’s something you will fully grasp only if you’re familiar with Japanese-English education material, but it still manages to be utterly hilarious even if you haven’t read those guides. It’s all definitely a mark of how good a storywriter Kenta Shinohara is.

And for a change, Bibury Animation Studios has stepped up their game with the animation. This is especially apparent in the “Dear Kara” and “Date With the Knight” vignettes, where the quality of that animation feels more like a high-production anime. You can see it in both the characters’ movements and in background details like fireworks. It’s pretty clear that Bibury has decided that since the story in this series of vignettes is getting such depths, they should probably step up their game as well. And to their credit, they have succeeded.

Not much bad about this episode for once.

Honestly, the most people would have to complain about in Witch Watch Ep. 9 “Dear Kara / New Friends / Date With the Knight” is the mood whiplash. The episode basically moves from heart-wrenching drama to esoteric comedy in the blink of an eye. To be fair though, that’s all down to the vignette nature of this episode. It fits the original manga perfectly since that was very much skit-based, but at the cost of that aforementioned whiplash. Suffice it to say: your mileage may vary.

Aside from that, action junkies might take issue with this episode. All because there’s no action in it at all. None whatsoever. Not even comic action. If your inner action junkie craves that, then might I suggest checking out Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no YaibaKaiju No. 8DDDDDAN DA DANSword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online IIZenshuSolo LevelingBlack Butler, and/or even a few episodes of Apocalypse Hotel? Those anime should have enough action in them to satisfy that inner action junkie until Witch Watch gets to its more action-packed arcs.
