James Gunn has opened up the DC Studios catalog with Superman. It releases in theaters on July 11th and it’s safe to say that the film is just as much about the human element of the story as it is about the Kryptonian. James Gunn sat down with our friend Brandon Davis of Phase Hero and chatted about the film. During their talk, Gunn was asked about the human element of making movies like this and why it’s a therapeutic process for him.
I don’t know how much of me that really is in the movie. I kind of go into a different state when I’m writing and finding these characters and I grew up with Superman. I feel so close to him and the whole gang that, it just is the way that, you know, it’s what I find interesting.
What I find interesting is seeing this character. We know his mythology. We know who the character is, where he’s from, and focusing on different parts of Superman than maybe we normally do. So, instead of focusing on him when he’s just falling in love with Lois or him when he’s married with Lois, it’s him in a part of the relationship where Lois is like, we’ve been dating for a couple months, but, ‘He’s an alien. He’s a little weird. I don’t really know how I feel, he’s very hot!’ But, you know, and then focusing on the psychology of the character of, like, who is he and how would he feel? What would be an emotional crisis for Superman? And then trying to portray that on film without being too maudlin or sentimental or over-the-top.
But but what is his experience as a human being, as a person? And how can he change and grow in an interior fashion? Because we’re not really focused usually on the interior of Superman.
