Big news out of the DC Universe. Deadline just confirmed plans that a Superman spinoff series is in the works at HBO Max.
The series, titled DC Crime, is likened to being in the vein of a true crime docuseries set in the DC-verse. Specifically, the show links to this summer’s flick Superman because Jimmy Olsen hosts the show. (Olsen was played by Skyler Gisondo in the feature, who will presumably be reprising the role for DC Crime.)
Season one of DC Crime reportedly centers around Gorilla Grodd, a villain with psychic powers most often seen facing off with The Flash. The character previously appeared in the CW’s Arrowverse.
Interestingly, the show comes from Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault. The duo previously created Netflix’s American Vandal, a true crime satire series that landed an Emmy nomination. Yacenda and Perrault will serve as showrunners, writers, and executive producers on the series. James Gunn and Peter Safran executive produce for DC Studios.
Superman proved a solid hit for DC this summer. The feature garnered praise from both audiences and critics alike; and though the domestic box office outpaced international, the film still ultimately brought in over $600 million. A sequel film will also fly into theaters in 2027.
In other DC live action news, HBO also plans to develop a V for Vendetta TV series for HBO.
So, what do you think about DC mixing things up with a “true crime” series? Are you excited to get more Jimmy Olsen after Superman? Let us know in the comments below.
