The Amateur is a new spy thriller that is now available to purchase on digital platforms. The movie stars Rami Malek as Charles Heller, a CIA cryptographer who goes rogue after his wife is murdered. His wife is played by Rachel Brosnahan, who will soon be seen playing Lois Lane in James Gunn’s Superman. Turns out, The Amateur director James Hawes also has an exciting future with DC Studios.
Hawes is an executive producer and director on Lanterns. He helmed the first two episodes of the upcoming comic book series, which will follow John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler). The Green Lantern characters are described as “two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder.”
That Hashtag Show was recently invited to Washington, DC to talk with Hawes and visit the International Spy Museum. While chatting with the director, we asked about working with Brosnahan ahead of their shared future with DC.
Rachel Brosnahan and James Hawes Have “Hung Out” Recently

“No,” Hawes revealed when asked if he and Brosnahan both knew about their DC jobs while making The Amateur. “But we have hung out together since under the DC umbrella, and it’s really cool.”

James Hawes Teases the Tone of Lanterns

During the event, Hawes also teased the tone of Lanterns.
“It’s a combination because it’s not my normal sandpit, really, to go off and play in that area. But the writing… Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, you know, they’ve done things like Ozark, True Detective,” Hawes said. “So… The scripts have got such wit, so much character. It’s like a buddy cop movie played out. And I’ve talked about this in the sort of True Detective, Fargo, No Country for Old Men, naturalistic… It’s a buddy cop movie, and then somebody flies.”
Stay tuned for more from our interview with Hawes and our experience visiting the International Spy Museum.
