David S. Goyer is an accomplished screenwriter behind some of the biggest and best movies and shows of the past 25 years. One of his screenwriting credits is The Dark Knight. No matter who you ask, that film is among the best superhero films of all time and one of the highest-rated movies ever. Goyer sat down with Brandon Davis of Phase Hero, who gave us an exclusive preview of their upcoming episode and they talked all things Foundation but also got to talking about some of Goyer’s previous work like The Dark Knight.
The end of The Dark Knight Rises gave us a final look at Bruce Wayne “riding off into the sunset”. Here’s what Goyer had to say about that nod with Alfred at the end of the film.

Q: Do you ever fantasize about what Bruce Wayne did after nodding to Alfred?
DG: “I can’t imagine. I mean, look, if Chris [Nolan] called me up and said, ‘I have an idea to do another…’ Would I absolutely consider it? 100%. But that was intended to be the end.
“I remember after The Dark Knight came out, 3 or 4 months have passed… Chris typically would… maybe I’d hear from him, maybe not. And he called me up after three months and said, ‘Do you want to have lunch?’ And that was, I realized, ‘Oh, he’s he’s entertaining the idea of talking about another movie,’ and I don’t even remember who said what but I remember sitting at lunch and we were talking about the movie.
“The first idea we came up with was that last scene. That was the first idea and then we knew we had a movie that he got out because then we said, ‘Okay, so the so the deal is Alfred’s his proxy father. He’s worried that Bruce sees no way out of this other than suicide by Batman. Death by Batman.’ Right? That’s what he’s focused on and he’s never going to get out, and he’s worried that that’s where his sort of adopted son is going to go and he thinks that that’s where his adopted son went and then at this moment, and he sees this nod and he realizes Bruce got out and we thought, ‘Oh, that that’s a story worth telling.’ We had no idea what the rest of the movie was, but we had the end.
“I don’t know what the idea would be, but to come to sort of undo that ending..?
