Matt Smith is heading to a Galaxy Far, Far Away. The Game of Thrones and Doctor Who actor has landed the role as the villain in the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter. He’s joining Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth in the film. Shawn Levy is set to direct a script from Jonathan Tropper. Deadline was the first with the news.

The film is set to begin shooting this Fall. It releases in theaters on May 28th, 2027. There aren’t concrete details on Matt Smith’s character, but it’s said that he’ll be one of the villains in the film. Casting has been heating up for the project to get people on board with the schedule. Levy has been meeting with several actors for this key role and the executives made the decision on Smith to play the next great villain in the Star Wars universe.

We learned about Star Wars: Starfighter at Star Wars: Celebration in April 2025 in Tokyo. The film is set five years after the events of Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. That film concluded the Skywalker Saga and is the last Star Wars film to release in theaters. The next film to hit theaters for Star Wars will be The Mandalorian And Grogu. That film comes out May 22nd, 2026. Jon Favreau is on board to direct the film, which is a spinoff from The Mandalorian.
