From October 13th, 2020 until October 9th, 2025, you could easily and readily get the greatest physical media box set ever made. The Scream Factory Friday the 13th Collection (Deluxe Edition) could be had for between $90 and $120, depending on sales and taxes. Now, it looks like that time has finally come to a close, and the saga of one of the most cherished movie releases ever has finished.

The box set was a marked improvement on any previous box set, including the Friday the 13th collection that came in a nice tin box. This set included ALL of the movies in the saga, somehow crossing over with two movie studios and even including Freddy vs. Jason and the 2009 remake of Friday the 13th. That would have been something to write home about, but the set went even further with new special features, 4K scans of the first four movies from the original camera negative, 2k scans of other movies, and the color timing fixed on Jason Lives.

For video nerds out there, all the movies were also on their own discs, so no more double-movie discs. That means the bitrate was much higher on these discs, leading to a better picture quality overall. Yes, in the years since this set has come out, we’ve had 4K versions of some of the movies, but not all. For some people, 4K movies are something that people are so-so on, some love them, some see them as an exorbitant purchase.

Mostly, this set felt like it was the start of something massive for physical media fans. Scream Factory had been a big part of our lives since they started putting out boutique Blu-ray releases of classic horror and genre movies, but this box set flipped a switch. It was like the floodgates were opening and people could see physical media as something more than just the on-disc content. As a physical media collector, this set was the start of my journey that I’m on today. I saw this thing, saw that artwork, the craftsmanship that went into the design of it, and I was in love.

2020 was a hard year for everyone. October 2020 was in the middle of a pandemic that made it so you really couldn’t go out and see your friends or family very easily. So naturally, movies, especially cherished movies like the Friday the 13th series, helped get us through. It was a sign that the world wasn’t entirely horrible. The Friday the 13th series is so much fun because each movie is varied. You go from Jason’s mom hunting camp counselors at Camp Crystal Lake to Jason going to space and everything in between.

So when a fire came barrelling down the mountain by my house in January of 2025, I had extra room in my car, and extra time to think about what to grab that I would be able to replace, but would really suck to lose. I ended up grabbing several of my most cherished physical media items, the Friday the 13th Collection as one of them. Every once in a while, I’ll catch it out of the corner of my eye on the shelf. Every time I go up and grab it, hold it in my hands, and think about the special and wonderful memories that it has given me.

So yes, this is just a box set, made of cardboard, with plastic, and whatever else goes into making Blu-ray discs, but its also much more than that to Friday the 13th fans. So to Scream Factory and Jason, we salute you.
