The Inaugural Dance Hall of Fame ceremony was filled with stars. That Hashtag Show had the privilege of attending the red carpet and maiden voyage for this awards celebration with 42 West. It was a celebration of dance that spanned the years. A crowd at the Glorya Kaufman Performing Arts Center in Los Angeles got to take a trip down memory lane.
Inductees included Alvin Ailey, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Stephen “tWitch” Boss, Misty Copeland, Bob Fosse, Martha Graham, Gene Kelly, Kenny Ortega, Jerome Robbins and Twyla Tharp. Each one of these legends did their own part to push discipline of dance forward and we were lucky enough to speak with a couple.
A common theme for this year’s ceremony was a celebration of Stephen “tWitch” Boss. His brother, Drè Rose told us about the legacy he leaves for young dancers. “My brother used dance as a form to express words that he couldn’t express,” Rose began. “So, when you dance, let you be you.”
The Inaugural Dance Hall of Fame Ceremony

So You Think You Can Dance executive producer Jeff Thacker also took a chance to talk with us. The Inaugural Dance Hall of Fame Ceremony had a longform view of the artform. Luminaries like Gene Kelly, Bob Fosse and Shirley MacLaine paved the way. Now, hip-hop has entered the fold and Thacker’s protege “tWitch” had a lot to do with that.
Thacker told us, “I know him as Steven, but tWitch. He is someone that I auditioned way, way back in 2007, and to see that young man grow, he came in, he was phenomenal when he came. He was phenomenal, he was a Superman. [tWitch] called himself Superman, and he proved that hands down. And I think what he’s done for this generation and the next generation is to take hip hop and make it into an art form.”
“Hip hop is not just street dancing anymore. There is a caliber equality. But to take that freedom that he had and to take the amount of creativity he has inside them and not put himself but share it with everybody is the one that makes tWitch so perfect,” he added. “If you take that and stick it all together, his legacy would’ve gone. And I know his kids when they go older are going to look back themselves and realize what a legacy and what a footprint he has made for hip hop. Because without, now, if you mentioned hip hop, you mention tWitch.”
