Nothing is what it seems in Silent Hill. Something fans of the games already know. While this mysterious, surreal, eerie quality is what keeps fans coming back for more, it could be daunting for the artists making the films. Given how much nuance, complexity, and understanding is required to tell these stories. Fortunately, when it comes to the latest film adaptation, “Return to Silent Hill”, it would seems all involved came prepared. That’s certainly true of actresses Hannah Emily Anderson and Evie Templeton. Both portray characters that are integral to the film having any depth beyond its surface horrors. Without them and their performances, the movie would easily fall apart into a mishmash of various nightmarish imagery.
Director Christophe Gans, who returns to the series after helming the original 2006 “Silent Hill” film, would not let that happen. Nor would his co-writers Sandra Vo-Anh and Will Schneider. This time they aren’t attempting to forge a brand new mythology out of the video games as the first two Silent Hill movies. But instead directly adapt the 2001 game, “Silent Hill 2” to the screen.

About “Return To Silent Hill”
“Return to Silent Hill” follows James Sunderland (Jeremy Irvine), a man wracked with guilt and loss after leaving the love of his life, Mary (Anderson), years ago in Silent Hill under ominous circumstances. Compelled to return to the town in order to search for her whereabouts, James encounters various creatures and people. This including an enigmatic little girl named Laura (Templeton). It turns out that these people all hold clues as to what happened to Mary and James himself. Truths that James is obliged to discover, whether he wants to or not.
Anderson & Templeton Eagerly Explored Every Area Of Their ‘Silent Hill’ Characters
Ahead of the release of “Return to Silent Hill”, I had the opportunity to speak to Hannah Emily Anderson and Evie Templeton about their work on the film. The two actresses were pleased to discuss their experiences without giving too much away. For Anderson, portraying multiple characters was a particular challenge. She explains how she enlisted the help of an acting and vocal coach in order to separate each distinct persona. Templeton had an equally tricky yet unique challenge. Which was that she’s already portrayed Laura in the 2024 remake of Silent Hill 2 for the PS5 and Windows. Then there’s the fact that both actresses had to go into the special effects makeup chair at one point or another, too.
