Netflix is turning up the volume this summer with Building the Band! The series is a fresh, feel-good music competition series that’s all about heart, harmony, and blind chemistry. Premiering July 9, 2025, the series will roll out in batches over three weeks, promising fans weekly doses of talent, drama, and incredible performances.
Hosted by Backstreet Boys legend AJ McLean, Building the Band introduces a unique twist to the typical competition show format. Talented singers from across the country enter isolated “booths”. They are then tasked with forming their own bands without ever seeing one another. These performers must rely solely on musical connection, creative chemistry, and vocal compatibility to make their choices. It’s a competition built entirely on instinct and artistry, not image.
Once the bands are formed, the stakes get even higher. Looks, choreography, and overall style are revealed, and not every match will feel perfect outside the booth. With their newly formed groups, the contestants must now navigate performance challenges, group dynamics, and the pressure of building a real band with real potential.
Acclaimed artist and girl group icon, and Tony Award Winner, Nicole Scherzinger serves as both mentor and judge. She will be guiding contestants through tough decisions and high-stakes performances. Starting in Episode 7, she’s joined by superstar guest judges Kelly Rowland (Destiny’s Child) as well as the late Liam Payne (One Direction). Their expertise in building successful music groups adds real-world credibility and heart to the competition.
The 10-episode season will release in three waves:
- Week 1 (July 9): Episodes 1–4
- Week 2 (July 16): Episodes 5–7
- Week 3 (July 23): Episodes 8–10
Produced by Cat Lawson, Alison Holloway, Katrina Morrison, Clara Elliot, and Simon Crossley, Building the Band promises unforgettable performances and powerful moments on the road to finding the next great music group.
