HAMNET stars Jessie Buckley, Paul Mescal, Emily Watson, and Joe Alwyn. The story brings to life a deeply emotional narrative that reimagines the family tragedy that shaped William Shakespeare’s most iconic play, Hamlet. Hamnet Shakespeare, the only son of William Shakespeare and Anne Hathaway, was born in 1585 as a twin to his sister Judith. His life, however, was heartbreakingly short. He died in 1596 at just 11 years old. He was most likely a victim of the widespread plague that ravaged England at the time. Only a few years later, Shakespeare began writing Hamlet, his longest and most enduring tragedy. Many scholars believe that the profound grief over his son’s death gave the play its haunting meditations on mortality, memory, and loss.

The screenplay, written by Zhao and O’Farrell, adapts the award-winning novel into a sweeping cinematic experience. The film combines historical resonance, literary prestige, as well as unforgettable performances, making it one of Focus Features’ most anticipated projects. The film’s production boasts a powerhouse creative team. This team includes producers Liza Marshall, Pippa Harris, Nicolas Gonda, Sam Mendes, and Steven Spielberg, alongside executive producers Kristie Macosko Krieger, Laurie Borg, and Zhao herself. So, with such a remarkable lineup of talent behind the camera, HAMNET is positioned to be one of the most prestigious releases of the year.

Audiences can expect the film to be a strong awards contender this season. Don’t miss the chance to experience HAMNET in select theaters starting November 27, 2025, and everywhere December 12, 2025.
