Happy’s Place is currently on its second season on NBC and stars Reba McEntire and Belissa Escobedo as two half-sisters who co-own their late father’s restaurant. The series was created by Kevin and Julie Abbott, with Kevin having previously collaborated with McEntire on Reba.

That Hashtag Show caught up with the creative duo to discuss the importance of Isabella’s bond with Emmett, Steve’s latest career goals, and the major reveal in season 2, episode 9. Check out our full conversation below:

In “Silence Was Golden,” Emmett reveals that he had known about Isabella’s existence long before she and Bobbie met. While the secret blows up Bobbie and Emmett’s relationship, Abbott shares why it was important to show how it also affected Isabella.

“We wanted to make certain that we honored how Isabella was feeling about Emmett being privy to it. And ultimately, Emmett is a man who doesn’t speak a lot. But when he speaks, he means what he says, and he’s a very deep-feeling guy. So I thought it just was really important to have the two of them have an honest conversation where he got to kind of confront why he would be guilty.”

Season 2 has also seen Steve consider a career change, with him even trying to pursue acting. While Pablo Castelblanco is a resident scene stealer, his character doesn’t quite share his talents. Fryman praises Castelblanco’s ability to tackle the hilariously ironic plotline.

“These are not people who phone in their performances at all. And when these scripts come out, and this one in particular, it’s like Pablo is thinking about it 24/7. He is walking around his living room at home, figuring [it out]. When he comes in, he’s got stuff loaded, and he just is always experimenting all the way through shooting. It’s a really wonderful thing to see how committed he is. And they all are.”

New episodes of Happy’s Place season 2 air Fridays at 8/7c on NBC and are available to stream next-day on Peacock.
