Fresh off redefining video game adaptations with HBO’s The Last Of Us. Craig Mazin is setting his sights on another juggernaut. HBO is officially developing a Baldur’s Gate drama series, with Mazin attached as creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner.
Unlike The Last Of Us, which closely followed the narrative of its source material. Baldur’s Gate will push the story forward. The series is set immediately after the events of Baldur’s Gate 3. Exploring the fallout of that game’s world shaping decisions as familiar characters and new faces grapple with the consequences.
Mazin’s involvement is not casual. He has reportedly logged nearly 1000 hours in Baldur’s Gate 3. Completed its brutal Honor Mode, and has been a weekly Dungeons and Dragons Dungeon Master for over 15 years. This is not a paycheck job; it is a passion project.
“After putting nearly 1000 hours into the incredible world of Baldur’s Gate 3, it is a dream come true to be able to continue the story,” Mazin said. He emphasized his devotion to D and D, Larian Studios’ adaptation, and his intent to treat the characters and lore with respect.
Series Details
The HBO series is based on Wizards of the Coast’s video game franchise. It will be executive-produced by Mazin alongside Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor, and Hasbro Entertainment’s Gabriel Marano. Chris Perkins, longtime Head of Story at Wizards of the Coast, will serve as a consultant.
The show will draw heavily from Baldur’s Gate 3, focusing on how that story begins and ends, while largely avoiding direct adaptation of the first two games. Still, shared Dungeons and Dragons lore will play a role, grounding the series firmly within The Forgotten Realms.
The narrative structure follows classic D&D tradition. New protagonists begin with limited power and grow through dangerous adventures. Along the way, they will encounter iconic characters from Baldur’s Gate 3, now immensely powerful figures who may help, hinder, or manipulate the new heroes.
Mazin also plans to reach out to members of the original game’s voice cast about appearing in the series, echoing the approach he used on The Last Of Us. It is a smart move that honors the fanbase and maintains continuity across mediums.
Why This Matters
With no new Baldur’s Gate game currently in development, Mazin has rare creative freedom. The series is designed to be ongoing, allowing HBO to explore different corners of the sprawling fantasy world rather than being locked into a fixed endpoint.
HBO executives are clearly confident. Francesca Orsi, EVP and Head of HBO Drama Programming, praised Mazin’s deep connection to the material and his ability to build immersive worlds filled with compelling characters.
The timing could not be better. Baldur’s Gate 3 launched to massive success, surpassing 15 million players, winning over 34 industry awards, and becoming the first game to sweep all five major Game of the Year awards.
