Some ideas refuse to die, despite what time and the box office may do to delay them. Amazon-MGM’s Highlander reboot with director Chad Stahelski is one such project, as the John Wick franchise helmer is as dogged about making it happen as his star Henry Cavill is. Unfortunately, the Man of Steel star’s dedication may have caused a bit of a snag for the oft-delayed project; as his workout regimen had an unexpected consequence.

Per reporting from THR, the project co-starring Russell Crowe, Karen Gillan, and Dave Bautista will now be entering production at the start of 2026. The reason for this latest Highlander hurdle is because of Mr. Cavill sustaining “an injury during pre-production.” At the time of this writing, there are no further details as to what sort of injury we’re talking about here; but it seems to be presumed that it’s connected to the training phase of the journey.

A curious Christopher Lambert looks over his shoulder in Highlander.

It could be worse though, as The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare star’s passion project has been kicking around since early attempts at a reboot kicked off in 2008. The current variant with Chad Stahelski at the helm was announced back in 2016, with Henry Cavill coming on board in 2021. With just weeks to go until Highlander was supposed to start shooting, this couldn’t have happened at a worse time.

Actually, I could be wrong in that assumption, thanks to my status as a James Bond fan. Let’s not forget how Daniel Craig’s own history of injuries impacted the actual production schedules of Spectre and No Time to Die. In any case, here’s hoping that Mr. Cavill’s injuries are healed in due time, and that he’s still able to paint some Warhammer 40,000 models during his recovery period. (If he isn’t, you know, actually working on Prime Video’s Warhammer series in the interim.) As for Highlander, we still don’t have a release date for its arrival – but you can stream the 1986 original through several platforms, including Amazon’s very own platform.
