It’s quite a busy time in the life of auteur Guillermo del Toro, as Frankenstein makes the press rounds connected to its 2026 Oscar nominations. That apparently hasn’t prevented him from having some fun on the other side of the camera, as the iconic creative has revealed he’s going to be returning to It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

I don’t know about you, but considering the rough sledding our world has been going through lately, this is exactly the sort of news I want to hear. Without any further delay, here’s how Mr. del Toro broke that news, via Twitter:

In the absence of official details surrounding this Sunny resurgence, I think it’s safe to say that Pappy McPoyle will return for Season 18. Unless of course the gang behind The Gang are somehow filming ahead, during an epic two-season shoot. Or, maybe there’s an outside chance that another series, ad campaign, or project has secured the use of this character?

Whatever the case may be, Guillermo del Toro stepping into the mad wizard look of the McPoyle family patriarch has been a long time coming. And this is exactly the sort of laughter we could all use.

We Haven’t Seen It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’s Pappy McPoyle In A Decade

Prior to this It’s Always Sunny reunion, Guillermo del Toro has made two guest spots as Pappy; the first being Season 8’s “The Maureen Ponderosa Wedding Massacre.” Last seen in 2016’s Season 11 episode “McPoyle vs. Ponderosa: The Trial of the Century,” the Academy Award-winner took the stand to testify during those titular legal proceedings.

The results were nothing short of magic, and Twitter users seem to agree. For those who need further convincing, take a look at this reel of Pappy’s appearances so far, below:

When your show has run as long as It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has, the bench for returning and recurring characters tends to be quite deep. Which leads me to the question of why Pappy McPoyle will be spotted again. Is the McPoyle family hatching another scheme to best The Gang? Will Pappy have even more birds at his disposal this time around? And what sort of deforming accident will those rascals incur this time?

All will (hopefully) be answered in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Season 18, which is currently in production for an unspecified debut. If it’s as funny as the stuff we’ve seen above, it could potentially bring the world much needed joy, on the wings of a Pocono swallow. Don’t worry, all 17 seasons are currently streaming on Hulu – in case you want to refresh yourself on the McPoyle Family Saga so far.
