The Amazonian warrior is officially heading back to the big screen. DC Studios co-chair James Gunn has confirmed that a brand-new Wonder Woman film is currently in development, marking a major milestone for the studio’s evolving cinematic universe.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn revealed, “Wonder Woman’s being written right now,” adding that while the script is underway, no actress has been cast yet to don the iconic armour.
This exciting development comes after a period of ambiguity surrounding the character’s future. The previously announced third installment of the Gal Gadot-led Wonder Woman series. Which was expected to be helmed by Patty Jenkins, was shelved by Warner Bros. in 2022. The move coincided with Gunn and producer Peter Safran taking the reins of DC Studios. In their effort to revamp the brand’s cinematic strategy.
What’s Been The Word On Wonder Woman?
Despite Gadot stating in August 2023 that she was working on a new Wonder Woman project in collaboration with the studio heads. Reports quickly clarified that a third standalone film was not in active development at the time.
Gunn also weighed in on the strategic vision for DC’s future, echoing earlier remarks by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav about the pivotal roles of Superman, Batman, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman in the new DC Universe. “I wouldn’t say only those four characters are crucial,” Gunn said, “but they are certainly central to our plans. At this moment, I feel fantastic about where we are with two of them, and we’re actively shaping the path forward for the others.”
The rebooted DC Universe will officially launch with Superman, starring David Corenswet, set to premiere on July 11, 2025. That will be followed by Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, featuring Milly Alcock, in June 2026. A fresh take on the Dark Knight, titled The Brave and the Bold, is also in the pipeline.
With Wonder Woman officially back on the creative docket, the future of the DC Universe looks more empowered than ever.
