It’s been a little while since rumors started swirling about a Jamie Lee Curtis-led Murder, She Wrote film. More specifically, it’ll be two years as of this December – which almost sounds like bad news for the Universal reboot. That couldn’t be further from the truth, as the second coming of Jessica Fletcher now has a release date that’s rather fitting in light of that time of year.

It’s now been confirmed by Deadline that director Jason Moore’s cinematic reinvention of Angela Lansbury’s iconic CBS series will open on December 22, 2027. The good news is that you’ll only have to wait a little over a year to finally see Ms. Fletcher return to her computer. (Yes, it counts! Go watch the Season 12 opening, if you doubt it!) However, there’s a bit of a catch – as Jamie Lee Curtis will have some stiff competition to fend off to win the box office.

Next December’s Box Office Is Going To Be An All-Out Brawl

December 2027 has become a hot bed of activity, and no it’s not because there’s an Avatar movie on the books. Though there’s another Disney-owned juggernaut scheduled to do some killing of its own. Take a look at what next Christmas’ theatrical calendar is set to bring us all:

  • Avengers: Secret Wars vs. The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum – 12/17/27
  • Buds vs. Murder, She Wrote – 12/22/27
  • Untitled Nancy Meyers Rom-Com – 12/25/27

There are some silver linings to Murder, She Wrote’s current date with destiny. As far as Avengers and Lord of the Rings fans are concerned, the overlap of those fandoms with die hard Jessica Fletcher devotees wouldn’t appear to be that great.

Even that slim space on this particular Venn diagram provides a good segue to the other positive possibility, which would see Murder, She Wrote becoming a slow-burn hit with older audiences. If The Greatest Showman could go from a so-so start to a holiday victory with legs, anything’s possible.

Honestly, the only scenario we should worry about is if Rian Johnson surprises the world with a new Benoit Blanc mystery for next Christmas. But even if he was planning something, you could believe he’d steer clear of Jamie Lee Curtis’ holiday tentpole – out of respect and friendship from their time together on Knives Out

Murder, She Wrote will be on the case, only in theaters, on December 22, 2027. Those of you who want to follow the clues up to that release date should stick with THS’ Movie News Archives.
