Netflix is setting the stage for a love story that promises laughter, tears, and poetry in the upcoming romantic drama My Oxford Year, premiering August 1. Directed by Iain Morris (The Inbetweeners) and based on the best-selling novel by Julia Whelan, the film stars Sofia Carson (Purple Heart) and Corey Mylchreest (Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story) in a heartfelt tale of ambition, love, and self-discovery set against the dreamy backdrop of Oxford University.

Carson stars as Anna, a driven young American woman whose life is carefully mapped out. That is, until she arrives in the UK and meets Jamie, a witty and enigmatic Oxford local played by Mylchreest. What begins as a brief detour from her goals becomes a transformative experience for both characters. The screenplay, written by Allison Burnett and Melissa Osborne, brings nuance, humor, and vulnerability to this contemporary coming-of-age love story.

The film also features a strong supporting cast, including Dougray Scott, Catherine McCormack, Harry Trevaldwyn, Esmé Kingdom, and Poppy Gilbert, among others. Produced by Temple Hill’s Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey, and Laura Quicksilver, with Carson also serving as executive producer, the film aims to balance sweeping romance with grounded emotion.

Filmed on location in Oxford, the production intentionally captured Carson’s first-time reactions to the historic campus on camera, blurring the line between actor and character. “To truly experience Oxford just as Anna would,” Carson explains, “I chose not to visit the locations beforehand.”

Mylchreest, who drew from personal memories of time spent in Oxford, describes the film as “a lovely journey” filled with heart, laughter, and unexpected turns.

Prepare to fall in love this summer when My Oxford Year debuts August 1 on Netflix.
