Sony Pictures Classics, in partnership with Fathom Entertainment, has announced a global theatrical premiere of the critically acclaimed Broadway revival Merrily We Roll Along. The filmed version of the Tony-winning musical, directed by Maria Friedman, will debut in theaters worldwide on December 5, 2025, offering fans a rare opportunity to experience one of Broadway’s most celebrated productions on the big screen.
This cinematic presentation stars Tony Award Winners Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff, and Lindsay Mendez and captures the energy and emotion of the live performance that captivated audiences during its record-breaking Broadway run. Supporting cast members include Krystal Joy Brown, Katie Rose Clarke, and Reg Rogers, each adding depth to Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s poignant story of friendship, ambition, and the passage of time.
WHAT IS MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG?
Merrily We Roll Along chronicles the complex, often painful, evolution of the relationship between Franklin Shepard, a composer-turned-producer, and his two closest friends, Mary and Charley. Uniquely told in reverse chronological order, the show explores how dreams can shift, relationships can fray, and the price of success can sometimes be high.
The original Broadway production, debuting in 1981, was ahead of its time, but Maria Friedman’s 2023-2024 revival reimagined the musical with a new emotional clarity and theatrical elegance. The revival not only smashed house records at Broadway’s Hudson Theatre but also swept the 2024 Tony Awards, winning Best Revival of a Musical, Best Lead Actor, Best Featured Actor, and Best Orchestrations. In London, the show made similar waves, receiving more five-star reviews than any production in West End history and taking home the Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival.
Produced by Sonia Friedman, David Babani, and others, with RadicalMedia’s Jon Kamen and Dave Sirulnick among the producers, the film is poised to extend the show’s reach far beyond Broadway. Executive producers and creative partners include a host of theater veterans and media powerhouses, ensuring a production of the highest quality.
With anticipated theatrical releases across the U.S., UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and more, Merrily We Roll Along is set to become a global celebration of Sondheim’s genius and a must-see event for musical theater fans everywhere.
