This weekend’s box office was headlined by one of the biggest openings of the year, though it fell just short of the most aggressive projections. Even so, the arrival of a major family blockbuster injected serious energy into theaters, while the rest of the chart saw significant drops as a result.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Delivers Big, But Not Record-Breaking

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie debuted with a massive $130.9 million opening weekend.
That is an enormous number by any standard, though it does fall below the $145 million to $160 million tracking range and my personal $155 million estimate. Even so, this is still one of the strongest openings of the year and a clear sign that the film connected with its target audience.
The slightly lower-than-expected debut may reflect just how front-loaded the anticipation was, but there is no denying the film’s impact. It dominated the weekend and left very little room for anything else to compete.
Project Hail Mary Takes a Hit
Project Hail Mary brought in $30.7 million in its third weekend.
The arrival of a major four-quadrant family film cut deeply into its box office share. After two strong weekends, the drop here is steep but expected given the scale of new competition. Even so, the film continues to post solid numbers and remains a strong performer overall.
The Drama Finds a Lane
The Drama opened with $14.4 million.
Launching in the shadow of a massive blockbuster is never easy, but this is a respectable box office debut under the circumstances. It managed to attract a different box office segment and carve out a space for itself despite the overwhelming competition.
Hoppers Continues to Fade
Hoppers earned $5.8 million in its fifth weekend.
With a new family juggernaut now dominating theaters, Hoppers has naturally begun to wind down. Its earlier success remains impressive, but its run is clearly entering its final stages.
Reminders of Him Nears the End
Reminders of Him added $2.2 million in its fourth weekend.
The film continues its decline after an initially strong debut. With new releases dominating attention, it is now firmly in the late stage of its theatrical run.
Next Weekend’s Predictions
Next weekend sees the release of You, Me & Tuscany, which is currently tracking between $12 million and $18 million. While that range suggests a solid debut, the film faces a clear uphill battle in terms of visibility.
The marketing push has been relatively quiet, which could limit its ability to reach beyond a niche audience at the box office. As a result, a debut closer to $12 million feels like the most likely outcome unless awareness improves significantly leading into release.
As always, we’ll find out next week.
