The Roses (2025), directed by Jay Roach and written by Tony McNamara, reimagines the classic War of the Roses story for a modern audience. I wasn’t familiar with the original film, but in the end, that didn’t matter. The story is wildly entertaining, and that’s due to the fun script and fantastic cast.

Anchored by Academy Award winners Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch, the film dives into the chaos of marriage, ambition, and resentment with biting wit and emotional intensity.

The story follows Ivy Rose (Olivia Colman), a gifted chef whose career is on the rise, and Theo Rose (Benedict Cumberbatch), an accomplished architect whose life implodes after a devastating accident. As Ivy’s success grows, her whimsy for life and newfound success lead to neglect of her family and husband. On the flipside, Theo struggles with his new role as a stay-at-home father. This sudden shift leads to mounting tension, jealousy, and an escalating marital breakdown.

Colman and Cumberbatch are at the top of their game. Colman delivers a performance full of sharp humor and raw vulnerability, while Cumberbatch perfectly embodies Theo’s spiraling pride and bitterness. Their chemistry is electric, creating a storm of tragic, hilarious, and cringe-worthy moments that keep the audience laughing.

However, my biggest complaint is some of the supporting cast. Sunita Mani (A Nice Indian Boy) and Ncuti Gatwa (Doctor Who) shine as Ivy’s sous chef and head waiter, grounding the restaurant world with energy and charm. Jamie Demetriou’s pretentious flair and Zoë Chao’s aloof wit balance the drama beautifully. On the other hand, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, Andy Samberg and Kate McKinnon feel out of place. Their exaggerated dynamic often clashes with the tone and distracts from Colman and Cumberbatch’s central conflict, leaving their subplot feeling unnecessary.

With that said, fans of Olivia Colman, Benedict Cumberbatch, or modern satire, this film is a must-watch.

The Roses hits theaters August 29, 2025. Go see it!
