The yellow brick road leads straight to Las Vegas this summer, as The Wizard of Oz at Sphere prepares to sweep audiences off their feet starting August 28, 2025. In a bold new reimagining of the 1939 classic, Sphere Studios has unveiled groundbreaking details surrounding the experience’s use of sound, score, and infrasound technology. They plan on turning the beloved film into a fully immersive sensory event.
At the heart of this transformation is Sphere Immersive Sound, a proprietary audio system that utilizes 167,000 individually programmable speakers embedded throughout the venue. The original mono audio of Oz was separated into stems: vocals, dialogue, and effects. Then it’s reconstructed and enhanced to create a sound mix that allows music and voices to move dynamically around the space. The iconic score was also re-recorded on the same 1930s scoring stage using vintage instrumentation techniques, including pizzicato, vibrato, and even the original ocarina used in “If I Only Had a Brain.”
“We approached the recording and mixing process for The Wizard of Oz at Sphere with a deep reverence for the original music,” said Grammy-winning music supervisor Julianne Jordan. “Now, it can be heard and felt like never before.”
That’s not an exaggeration. Also, the Sphere is introducing infrasound and haptic seat technology to deepen the experience. From subtle tones in the haunted forest to booming vibrations in the Wizard’s throne room, audiences won’t just hear the film, they’ll live it.
“This is the first time sound technology has been used in this way in any venue,” said Paul Freeman, VP and Principal Audio Artist at Sphere Studios. “Audiences will literally feel what they are hearing.”
Combined with Sphere’s massive 160,000 sq. ft. display and environmental effects like scents and wind, The Wizard of Oz at Sphere is set to be a one-of-a-kind journey into one of cinema’s most treasured worlds.
