Tron: Ares might have encountered a bigger obstacle on the grid than we all thought. Deadline reports that their initial projections for the Disney film were a bit off. A previous piece from the outlet said that Tron: Ares cost about $180 million to make. Now, Deadline says that the sequel film ended up being more like $220 million. Now, that difference of $40 million dollars might not matter if the film was doing a bit better at the box office. But, it seems like Tron: Ares is a modest success instead.

At current calculations, Deadline says that Disney’s new movie is poised to lose about $132 million at the box office. (That figure adds in expenses like the San Diego Comic-Con marketing budget, lightcycles and all. Not to mention shutting down Hollywood Boulevard for an amazing Nine Inch Nails concert.) So, there’s just a little bit of ambivalence around the franchise.

The CinemaScore for Tron: Ares sits at a B+, the same as Tron: Legacy before it. It’s interesting to think about what could have been if this movie had launched at a different point in the year. Horror is notorious for snuffing out competitors in October. But, Disney already has Zootopia 2 on the way this fall, and Wicked: For Good looks to rule the end of the year box office.

How good is Tron: Ares?

Actually pretty fine. Tron: Ares is a movie you will enjoy if you go into it for the vibes. Its a visual spectacle and an auditory bath in that excellent Nine Inch Nails soundtrack. Our critic, Mike Reyes basically predicted Ares’s second weekend drop. He correctly pinned The Black Phone 2 as the biggest thing in the way for the third Tron picture.

“Naturally, I’m expecting Ares to lose its top slot to this weekend’s hot ticket The Black Phone 2 (which we’ve reviewed.) In a year that’s seen even box office juggernaut Blumhouse struggling to knock it out of the park, the Ethan Hawke/Mason Thames led sequel might offer an easy win,” Reyes argued. “Of course, I’m basing that on both the Halloween friendly release date, as well as the huge tide of goodwill the 2021 original banked upon its release. It’s science, folks; as this formula should propel Universal’s horror show to the top.”
