The first trailer for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple has arrived, offering a chilling preview of Alex Garland’s follow-up to 28 Years Later. The film, directed by Nia DaCosta, will hit theatres on January 16.
The sequel was shot back-to-back with 28 Years Later, ensuring audiences won’t have to wait long to see the story continue. Ralph Fiennes returns as Dr. Kelson, joined by Chi Lewis-Parry, Jack O’Connell, and Alfie Williams.
The Bone Temple
The trailer reintroduces Dr. Kelson, who has spent years constructing the eerie ossuary known as the Bone Temple from human and infected remains. In the footage, he is shown lowering his signature blowgun and approaching Samson, a towering alpha infected. The official description teases that Kelson enters a shocking new relationship, one with the potential to alter the world forever.

The footage also spotlights the brutal gang known as the Jimmies. The group first appeared at the end of 28 Years Later, rescuing the young survivor Spike. In the new film, Spike reluctantly joins their ranks and dons the gang’s trademark blonde wig. Their leader, Sir Jimmy Crystal (O’Connell), is styled after disgraced U.K. media figure Jimmy Savile. The Jimmies’ sinister presence reinforces a central theme of the franchise: that the true monsters may not be the infected, but other humans.
Behind the Scenes
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is written by Alex Garland and directed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman, The Marvels). Danny Boyle, who helmed the original 28 Days Later, serves as a producer alongside Andrew Macdonald and Peter Rice.

With its grim visuals, unsettling villains, and world-expanding storyline, the trailer suggests the franchise is embracing both its horror roots and its examination of human cruelty. Fans will see the full scope of the Bone Temple’s horrors when the film debuts in January.
