Artists for Artists, the production company from Kenan Thompson and Johnny Ryan Jr. is developing a biopic of the famous pro wrestler Randy Savage. Deadline was the first with the news. The project is titled Macho, and Thompson and Ryan Jr. have been lifelong fans of the Macho Man. The project comes from a script by Savage’s brother Lanny Poffo and Eric Shapiro.
Thompson and Ryan Jr. will produce alongside Paul Coy Allen of Midas Entertainment Group, with Jonathon Davino (Immaculate), Cory Litwin, Boris Shvarts, and Monica Weber exec producing. Range Select will handle sales on the project.
The Macho Man, born Randy Mario Poffo, was one of the biggest and most influential figures in professional wrestling through the late 70s, 80s, and into the 90s. Among a sea of larger-than-life characters, he was the largest. He signed with the World Wrestling Federation in the mid-80s and never looked back, going on to multiple world championship titles in World Championship Wrestling. Savage passed away in 2011, just as it looked like his life was turning back around. He was posthumously inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2015. This would be the first feature film to tell the story of his life.
Ryan Jr. said, “Macho man Randy Savage was the greatest showman of all time and the OG bad boy of entertainment. His outfits were as electric as his personality and he’s so much more than an artist, he’s an icon. Lanny and Eric did a great job capturing this story and the crazy 80s wrestling era that turnt wrestling figures into life long pop culture icons.”
Thompson said, “Beyond excited for this one!! Macho Man is hands down one of the greatest of all time and can’t wait to bring his story to the screen!!!”
