Yes, it’s finally happening. We’re getting a new The Mummy movie with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. And to add the cherry on top, the filmmakers behind Ready or Not, Abigail, and Scream 5 and 6, Radio Silence are on board to direct.
The trio of The Mummy movies from 1999 to 2008 are held to an incredibly high regard these days and this news is sure to make fans of those movies jump with joy. Both the stars from those films, Fraser and Weisz are in talks to reprise their roles in what’s being described as a sequel and not a reboot.
Radio Silence, the filmmaking team of Matt Bettinelli-Oplin and Tyler Gillett are also in talks to direct. They made their breakthrough with Ready Or Not and parleyed that into a budding career in Hollywood with films like Scream 5 and Abigail. They revitalized the Scream franchise, so now Universal is betting that they can do the same thing with The Mummy. Sean Daniel, who produced the original movies is back as a producer alongside William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein.
The Mummy brought a new flair to the classic Universal Monsters character by combining it with Indiana Jones style adventure with two absolutely dynamite performances from Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. It spawned two more sequels and a prequel and was one of Universal’s most profitable franchises at the time.
David Coggeshall wrote the screenplay for the film, and it could possibly disregard the events of the third film, but for right now the plot details are under wraps.
We’ll keep you updated on all things The Mummy as we get news.
