Another Jane Austen adaptation is on the way. Focus Features will release a fresh take on Sense and Sensibility. Daisy Edgar-Jones is set to lead the film, with Georgia Oakley directing.
Originally published anonymously in 1811, Austen’s Sense and Sensibility remains one of the author’s most beloved (and adapted) works. The story follows sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, opposites in their emotional approach, as they navigate love, loss, and financial uncertainty amid the societal expectations of 18th century England.
Edgar-Jones will play Elinor in the upcoming feature adaptation. She shared a photo of herself holding the novel on social to announce her involvement in the film.
The project comes from Focus Features and Working Title Films. Bestselling author Diana Reid penned the script; Reid’s won several book prizes and released her third book Signs of Damage to critical acclaim earlier this year. Director Oakley received a BAFTA nomination for her debut feature Blue Jean.
Edgar-Jones’ credits include the blockbuster flick Twisters and the adaptation of the novel Where the Crawdads Sing. She recently executive produced and starred in On Swift Horses. Edgar-Jones also received critical acclaim for her work in television, earning BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations for Normal People, as well as a Golden Globe Nomination for Under the Banner of Heaven.
Sense and Sensibility has been adapted multiple times for TV and film over the years. These adaptations include two different BBC TV productions (in 1971 and 2008) and a popular 1995 film adaptation penned by Emma Thompson, who also starred in the feature opposite Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant, and Alan Rickman.
The upcoming film also marks Focus Features’ return to Austenland; the company produced the 2005 adaptation of Pride & Prejudice, as well as the 2020 adaptation of Emma.
Sense and Sensibility doesn’t have a release date yet, but check back to THS for more updates.
