It was quite the stir this morning when news broke that Emerald Fennell was directing a Basic Instinct remake. Joe Eszterhas, the original writer for Basic Instinct told The Guardian in an interview that Emerald was negotiating with the producers for a new film. Well, that might have been a bit hasty on his part, because Variety came out with a new report directly from Fennell’s team disputing that new report.

Here’s what Eszterhas had to say in his quote.

“The producers are negotiating with a really interesting director – a Brit, Emerald Fennell – who did Promising Young Woman and Wuthering Heights. Her sensibility is exactly right. She’s someone who is not afraid of controversy and sexuality. So I’m thrilled by that. I hope it works out.”

Emerald Fennell’s representatives had this to say:

“There’s no truth in this. She is not involved in any way.”

As for any other details on the Amazon MGM Studios reboot of Basic Instinct, we don’t have much. Joe Eszterhas is actually writing the new reboot and his script juggles “copycat serial killers with elements of the supernatural.”

Sharon Stone was the star of the first two films in the series, setting off a cultural bomb like no other in the first film with the infamous legs uncrossing scene. Here’s what Eszterhas had to say in a statement last year about writing the upcoming film.

“To those who question what an 80-year-old man is doing writing a sexy, erotic thriller: the rumors of my cinematic impotence are exaggerated and ageist ,I call my writing partner the ‘Twisted Little Man’ and he lives somewhere deep inside me. He was born 29 and he will die 29 and he tells me he is ‘sky high up’ to write this piece and provide viewers with a wild and orgasmic ride. That makes me very happy.”

So that’s all we can report for now, we’ll keep you updated as we get more news.
