This weekend’s box office saw a shake-up in the top five, with two major new releases joining the fray. Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps held onto the crown. However, The Bad Guys 2 and the rebooted The Naked Gun both made strong debuts. Meanwhile, Superman and Jurassic World: Rebirth continue their impressive runs deep into the summer season.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps Holds the Top Spot

Fantastic Four First Steps

Despite a steep 66% drop from its explosive opening. The Fantastic Four: First Steps managed to stay on top with $40 million in its second weekend. That brings its domestic total to $198.4 million. The drop was expected, considering the front-loaded nature of most MCU releases. However, the film’s buzz remains strong, and it’s still the movie to beat heading into August.

The Bad Guys 2 Breaks Out

The Bad Guys 2 debuted in second place with $22.2 million across 3,852 theatres. That’s a solid launch for the animated sequel. Which leaned heavily on the goodwill of its predecessor and a summer window with limited competition in the family space. While not a breakout hit; it’s a steady performer that could see strong weekday numbers as kids head back to theatres.

The Naked Gun Reboot Finds an Audience

Landing in third, Paramount’s The Naked Gun surprised some skeptics with a $17 million opening. The reboot of the classic slapstick comedy drew in older fans and curious newcomers. Helped by solid marketing and a recognizable brand. With comedy having a tough run at the box office lately, this performance is a promising start to its box office run.

Superman Holds Well in Week Four

Superman

In its fourth weekend, Superman dropped 44.1% to earn $13.9 million, bringing its total domestic gross to an impressive $316.3 million. James Gunn’s reboot continues to resonate with fans and remains one of the year’s biggest successes. The film also crossed the $300 million mark earlier in the week, cementing its place as a summer standout.

Jurassic World: Rebirth Keeps Roaring

Jurassic World: Rebirth rounded out the top five with $8.7 million in its fifth weekend. The film dropped 34.1% and played in 3,240 theatres, pushing its total to $317.6 million. It’s a quiet giant this summer, steadily chomping along and likely to finish as one of Universal’s most profitable entries this year.

Next Week’s Box Office Preview

Next weekend could bring a shakeup to the top of the charts with two highly anticipated newcomers. Freakier Friday and Weapons are both entering wide release, and while The Fantastic Four: First Steps will still be a factor, its third weekend performance will determine whether it can hold the top spot.

Freakier Friday is tracking for a debut between $30 million and $45 million. With built-in nostalgia, strong family appeal, and the Disney brand behind it, I expect the film to open around $32 million. That should put it right near the top of the box office, especially if Fantastic Four experiences another sizable drop.

Weapons is also looking like a strong contender. The thriller is tracking between $27 million and $37 million, and my prediction is that it’ll open closer to to $30 million. With its darker tone and appeal to older moviegoers, it could quietly pull off one of the bigger original hits of the season.

We’ll be back next week to see which film comes out on top. Especially with three movies all expected to be very clsoe in terms of revenue.
