It’s high time that Harold and Kumar make their grand return to movie screens.

The two high heroes of movies like Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle and Escape From Guantanamo Bay are getting a new movie from the creators of Cobra Kai. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald are closing in on a deal to write and direct a new installment in the comedy franchise.

Hurwitz and Schlossberg will direct the movie which is coming from Lionsgate-owned Mandate Pictures. The new film marks a return to the series that made them famous with 2004’s Go To White Castle and their directorial debut with Escape From Guantanamo Bay.

John Cho and Kal Penn are expected to return for the sequel and reprise their roles. There’s no deal currently for Neil Patrick Harris to return and play the fictionalized version of himself from the series.

Hurwitz, Schlossberg, and Heald will produce via their Counterbalance Entertainment banner, alongside Greg Shapiro, who produced the original movies and later went on to win an Oscar for best picture thanks to his work on war drama The Hurt Locker. Mandate, who also produced the original trio, will also produce.

Who Are Harold & Kumar?

The original film was a landmark for mid-2000s stoner comedies and laid the groundwork for comedies in the years to come. It told the story of Harold and Kumar as they went on a one-night adventure to try to get to White Castle for munchies. It was followed up by two sequels with Escape From Guantanamo Bay and 2011s A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas.

Here’s what Hurwitz and Schlossberg had to say in a statement:

“We’re fired up to bring Harold and Kumar back in a return to the unapologetically R-rated, smoke-filled chaos that started it all. It’s high time they puff and pass their wisdom onto a new generation. Just don’t tell their kids.”
