Johnny Depp is reportedly in final talks to join the latest iteration of A Christmas Carol.
The production, Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, comes from horror director Ti West (X, Pearl, MaXXXine) and Paramount Pictures.
Depp would play the title role of Ebenezer Scrooge, the miserly, misanthropic lead of the story originally penned by Charles Dickens. In Dickens’ novel, Scrooge is visited by the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future, who help him recognize the errors of his ways and embrace a more compassionate and giving lifestyle.
A number of Christmas Carol feature adaptations already exist, including the 1951 film starring Alastair Sim and the 2009 animated film starring Jim Carrey. Plus, Scrooged with Bill Murray, A Muppet Christmas Carol, and 2022’s musical variation Spirited with Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell. Currently, Robert Eggers (Nosferatu) is also developing a version of the story at Warner Bros., with Willem Dafoe potentially leading the feature as Scrooge.
Should Paramount close the deal with Depp, it would mark the actor’s first film role at a major studio since his appearance in 2018’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Warner Bros. fired Depp from the franchise following allegations of domestic abuse.
Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol comes from writer Nathaniel Halpern (Tales From the Loop, Legion). Andrea Riseborough (Oblivion, To Leslie) will also star. Stephen Deuters and Jason Forman executive produce the feature. If the deal with Depp closes and the project stays on track, the film will release in November 2026.
