KITT is making a big-screen comeback from the creators of Cobra Kai.

The creative team behind Cobra Kai, Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald, are in talks to bring Knight Rider to the big screen. The news comes from THR, who are reporting that Universal is close to a deal with them. Heald, Hurwitz, and Schlossberg would write the movie, with Hurwitz and Schlossberg to direct. They’ll produce with Counterbalance Entertainment alongside Kelly McCormick and David Leitch of 87North.

Knight Rider was a sensation in the 1980s on TV with a show starring David Hasselhoff. He starred as Michael Knight, a detective who becomes an agent for FLAG, the Foundation for Law and Government, and partners with a robotic car named KITT. The two of them fight crime and criminals who operate above the law. The feature take has been in development for a while, but Universal was looking for the right creative minds. With the Cobra Kai creators on board, anything could be possible, including a reunion with Hasselhoff on the movie.

The original series aired on NBC from 1982 to 1986.

Yeah, But Who Are These Guys Making The Knight Rider Movie?

Hurwitz and Schlossberg cut their teeth as directors on the Harold and Kumar movies and directed American Reunion for Universal. They hit it huge when they worked with Heald on Cobra Kai. It went from YouTube Red to a massive audience on Netflix for multiple seasons. They found a way to appeal to multiple generations, not jus the one that grew up with those characters. The series wrapped its sixth and final season eariler this year on Netflix.

They also have a new installment in the Harold and Kumar series coming up with Lionsgate/Mandate Pictures.
