Fans of the Parker novels don’t have anything to fear. Shane Black and the team want to capture as much grounded storytelling as they can. Play Dirty keeps it very real when it comes to the characters on-screen. Esquire talked to Black about bringing this story to the screen. It’s clear the filmmaker loves those books as a fan first.
“The Parker books had a rough, down-and-dirty feel,” Black says. “They paint the life of a professional thief in uncompromising terms. He’s an anti-hero, he’s a criminal. He’s a pragmatist, he’s a planner. That appealed to me. When you finish them, you feel like you’ve been ensconced within a type of old-school storytelling.”
