Some disappointing news from the world of “Shrek 5”. The Dreamworks Animation feature, previously slated to hit theaters on December 23 of this year, has now been pushed back to June 20, 2027. This according to JoBlo.

While this fan of the franchise is wishfully hoping that the delay is due to them going back to the previous style of animation, the move might just be strategic. Currently, Warner Bros. Pictures’ third film in the “Dune” franchise and Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Doomsday” are both scheduled for the week before. Along with a few other films around that same time, it a crowded December.

But one can argue that moving it to June 20, is no better as Sony Pictures’ “Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse is coming in hot right behind it. But as we saw this summer, for the right franchise, the crowds show up. True it’s not pre-2020, but we really need to stop comparing box office numbers from 2019 with current ones. We live in a completely different world now. Shrek is one of the most beloved animated franchises of all time, it will be fine.

WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT “SHREK 5”

We don’t know too much about “Shrek 5” as plot details are still under wraps. Its been 15 years since “Shrek Forever After”, which sounds insane. What we do know based on a clip that was released earlier this year is that the animation has evolved. Maybe a little too much as I alluded before, a lot of fans thought the new look was too much. Its interesting to note that in 2022, “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish”, the last film of we’ve seen from the franchise. It had a modernized animation style that was well received by fans.

The new film will feature the returning voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz as the iconic Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona. They will be joined by Zendaya, who will voice Shrek’s daughter Felicia. Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn are directing the movie.
