It’s been a while since we’ve seen Judge Dredd on our screens. The excellent Dredd starring Karl Urban was the last film to feature the lawbringing asskicker. Now, it appears another filmmaker is taking a shot. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Taika Waititi is taking on Judge Dredd as his next project. He’s attached to direct a new feature film take on Dredd with screenwriter Drew Pearce. Pearce has written movies like The Fall Guy and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.
Producers include Chris Kingsley, Jason Kingsley, and Ben Smith of Rebellion Developments, Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment, Jeremy Platt, Natalie Viscuso, and Drew Pearce.
THR is reporting that their sources have told them that Pearce and Waititi both grew up with the original comics and are huge fans that have been trying to work together on a project for years.
Who Is Judge Dredd?

Judge Dredd was created in the late 70s by writer John Wagner and artist Carlos Exquerra. He made his debut in the pages of 2000 AD. Dredd looks over the massive Mega-City One, part of a law enforcement body that empowers officers to be judge, jury, and executioner. It’s a satire of the justice system of today that has proven to be extremely popular with several comic series, video games, toys, books, and two movies. The series has sold over 100,000,000 comics and graphic novels.
The first film came out in 1995 and starred Sylvester Stallone, it was a massive budget-affair that drips 90s film aesthetic. It was poorly received, but is now somewhat of a cult classic. The real kicker though was the 2012 adaptation, Dredd. That film captured the attention of audiences and proved to be one of the best adaptations of a comic book, ever.
The story details for this new film are under wraps, but it is said to take plenty of inspiration from the comics and the dark humor that comes with them.
